I'm on a Mac. I used Toast to extract the original files from the "Passaic: The Complete Tapes 19.09.78" DVDs. The resulting .dv files were imported into Final Cut Express. Four cameras were used in the taping of this (and the next day's) show, and each camera required a different set of corrections, so the next step was to edit the show into individual camera shots, duplicating the crossfades between cameras. I then went through a second time and edited up all the glitches and other special cases that required extra attention. This resulted in over 700 edits (it's a very glitchy show). I then went in and established how each camera needed to be dealt with ─ removing any color artifacts that may have appeared in the B&W video and readjusting the highlights, midtones and blacks ─ and saved those four settings so they could be applied as needed. After these corrections were applied to their respective camera shots, repeated viewings of the results led to endless tweaking and perfecting, until I felt it was in a form I could share. The Final Cut files were then imported into iMovie, where I placed the chapter markers, and from there they went to Toast, which compiled the final DVDs.
I also copied the finished, uncompressed Final Cut files directly to miniDV tapes (two 80s and a 60), knowing improvements would undoubtedly be called for in the future. Perhaps when I get a copy of the incomplete-but-timecode-free version (that somebody is bound to post here or at abms) and remaster that part of the show, I could make miniDV copies for someone better equipped to do the DVD mastering of the material. I know a nicer mpeg2 conversion can be done with something more sophisticated than Toast, not to mention actual menus and chapters (and perhaps a version with an alternate audio signal using the original video soundtrack).
