Sometime in the early 2000s, JEMS did a big DAT trade with a Montreal-based taper who had recorded Springsteen as far back as 1978 and up through 1995 along with other artists. This recording comes from his analog master, transferred by him to DAT.

Up until now the most common circulating source for this show was released on CDR 'A Short Trip To Montreal' and appears to have came from an unknown generation tape with a fairly liberal amount of noise reduction or eq'ing to my ears.

Thanks to the never ending JEMS archives we now have a DAT copy of the cassette masters available to us. The master source for this show is filled with issues, 8 songs contain either cuts, splices or multiple speed fluctuations. Those issues are present in the master tapes, however, after conferring with JEMS South around this specific show I discovered in the mjk5510 archives a second recorder source. BK at JEMS South e-transferred the raw file and we were off and running.

The first issue is not present on 'A Short Trip To Montreal', there were 8 short blasts of digi-noise in the first 2 minutes of 'Badlands' that happened during the original master tapes to DAT transfer. Each blast was less than 2 seconds with 3 being less than 1 second, I patched 7 of the damaged sections with 'A Short Trip To Montreal' and 1 damaged section with Recorder 2 because the dynamics fit that section better. Though noticeable, they pass quickly and don't interfere too much.

There are 6 instances of speed fluctuations in the master tapes, 'A Short Trip To Montreal' simply cuts these out creating a splice/edit. I was able to patch 2 sections with Recorder 2 completely replacing the damaged sections. The other 4 I have left in due to no available patch but worked to pitch correct the issue as much as possible. There are 2 small fluctuations during 'Jungleland', the first I was able to correct to almost 100% and is practically un-noticeable, the other I would estimate I corrected about 80% of during the sax solo, still there but not nearly as bad as it was in the master. Unfortunately, 'Jungleland' and 'Thunder Road' are missing on the Recorder 2 tapes so there is no available patch. The other fluctuations take place during 'Rosalita', there is a cut in the Recorder 2 tape during this section so no available patch. I was able to correct about 70% of the fluctuation in the first instance and about 90% in the second. Both are still present but not as jarring as on the master. All other cuts/splices have been patched with Recorder 2 and are noted below.

Though not an official JEMS release, I'm pleased to present the most complete version, from the master tapes, of this outstanding show from the JEMS archives. Thanks again to JEMS (especially BK for supplying the file) and of course to the original taper (MZ).

Known Faults:
-Badlands: 8 small sections of digi-noise less than 2 seconds each during the first 2 minutes, these have been replaced with the same section from 'A Short Trip To Montreal' except the first damaged section of 1.730 seconds which has been replaced using Recorder 2 (the dynamics fit better).
-Prove It All Night: 22 seconds patched with Recorder 2
-Jungleland: splice / speed fluctuations (no patch available)
-Fire: 8 seconds of intro patched with Recorder 2
-Because The Night: 27 seconds patched with Recorder 2
-Point Blank: 13 seconds patched with Recorder 2
-Backstreets: 6 seconds patched with Recorder 2
-Rosalita: speed fluctuation (10 seconds) (no patch available)

Enjoy!
