In the annals of Bruce Springsteen tour lore this series of shows stands out as one of the most important to his legend. We turn our attention to Night Two of the stand with new transfers of both the Early and Late shows. There are at least two previous release of these shows. Each show has been released from unknown generation tapes (the late show misses "Jungleland" on the unknown gen release), the second release of each show is from CB's (aka: Mr. Anonymous) master tapes on Fanatic Records with the lineage of "Cassette > CDR" (the late show contains "Jungleland" but "Quarter To Three" is incomplete). As with the the previous night those transfers were done extremely well but were not azimuth or pitch adjusted. This release is azimuth and pitch adjusted, which we believe takes the show up a notch. In addition, "Quarter To Three" from the late show is complete with this transfer. The mastering on the previous releases tend to lean toward a major boost in the high end frequencies adding a bit of background noise. We have chosen to use a more subtle mastering as to not add unnecessary background noise, we feel this gives the shows a more natural sound. In addition, we have minimized or edited out a number of loud claps and bumps. CB's taping location for the early show was toward the back of the club, still fairly close in a 300 seat club. For the late show he was able to move to one of the tables in front of Bruce. The series of shows at the Roxy Theatre were a triumph and important point in Bruce's career. Having already conquered the East Coast and coming off a successful run of shows at the Bottom Line two months prior, Bruce and the band were primed to conquer the West Coast. No tape has surfaced for the opening night, the 16th, which Columbia had stacked with media and industry people, a fact Bruce became aware of, and very frustrated with, as the show progressed. After a lack of audience enthusiasm on the opening night and the pressure of a radio broadcast, the remainder of the shows were loose, high energy events. The Late show on the 18th is the first show of the stand we get a third encore with a bonus "Quarter To Three", again complete on this release. Once again, we owe a big debt of gratitude to CB aka Mr. Anonymous for not only trusting us with his master tapes but having the foresight to come armed with a deck in the first place. mjk5510 & JEMS
