“Good Rockin’ Tonight” Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band Madison Square Garden – New York, NY August 22, 1978 Original Master Series- Audience Recording Cassette>DAT>CDR>CD WAV Editor>Roxio>flac Have you heard the news? There’s good rockin tonight! Here goes round 2 of the MSG shows. I don’t claim to be a sound engineer as my talent is more in lines with the artwork and webdesign, so I hope this recording sits wells with the vast majority of the Bruce Springsteen fan community. There was a lot of controversy with the August 21st show regarding it being “lossy” versus a lossless recording. In order to get a better technical understanding of these recordings, here are comments regarding the MSG shows from the man who was there and taped these shows known as Mr Anonymous: “Hey guys--I recorded a lot of the great shows of the 70's and always circulated the tapes immediately. I've given these to Rob so the latest generation of Springsteen lovers can enjoy the great music that I've shared for more than thirty years. I've checked my tapes and the 1978 shows were recorded with dolby and transferred to CDR with the dolby on as well. I used a Sony stereo mic in 1976 and a Shure mono attenuating mic in 1977-78. I rolled off the mid bass by 6 db in order to cut a lot of the boom from the venue. I doubt that mic was capable of recording above 15hz as someone has said. Hey this was the 70's and monitors were crap compared to what we have today. For anyone that has a problem with mono, the monitors were all stacked on the stage and the same music played from both sides of the stage. I felt that stereo mics did nothing but blur the sound. I'll let the soundboard sound of 8/21 and 8/22/78 speak for itself.” Here are additional comments from another longtime fan with the moniker JEMSHQ: “Folks, trust me, this source, who provided to Fanatic, is UNIMPEACHABLE. He is one of the pioneers of all Springsteen tapers and his willingness to share here is a blessing to all collectors. Unless there was a transfer error, these masters simply don't have frequencies above 16khz.” Most of the photos used on this project have never been released to the public. So, the idea of creating new artwork was very exciting to say the least! Check out the photo of Bruce with his kid sister, Pam used on the front inner panel for this latest installment. On all of the projects I’ve worked on, the photos sent were taken 30 years ago, so I had to clean up spots, boost the color and contrast and then resize and crop them to fit as a jewel case insert. Because the recordings were coming from a cassette unit, several tapes were used and had to be turned over to the next side. This left gaps at the end of songs which I had to repair. Appropriate fade in and out had to be executed and then finally leaving my computer on all night until enough leechers became seeders to help share with everyone else. I’m saying this because there was a lot of time and effort put into creating the artwork and prepping the shows as available downloads. It was all done as a labor of love so the new generation of fans could enjoy cleaner sounding and in some cases more complete versions of these shows from the greatest performer in the world!.
