The most common version of this show in circulation is “Community Spirit”, Brucebase describes it as full of cuts and edits. In addition, it sounds to have been taken from a fairly high generation copy as it is also rife with hiss and some mild distortion. For this project I had two tape copies to work from, the copy out of Dan’s archives and a copy out of my own archives. Dan’s proved to have a slight edge in overall punch and crispness. It also had some issues, first, each side of each tape ran at a different pitch and needed to be adjusted separately. Every copy I’ve heard, including “Community Spirit”, also suffers from a drop in fidelity on the second side of the first tape with the right channel becoming rather muddy. This muddiness is not in the left channel, so, a simple left to right channel copy corrected this flaw. For the first time, each side of the first tape is at the same high quality. Oddly, “Badlands” is missing from both my copy and Dan’s copy. As noted in the notes for ‘Community Spirit’ it sounds like Bruce might say ‘Portland’ between “Badlands” and “Night”. This comment is found on both tape versions at the very start of the recordings. I originally thought that maybe Badlands was from another show, Portland perhaps, but the audience noises at the end of Badlands matches the audience noises at the start of the tape versions, specifically a young lady screaming. So, your guess is as good as ours, maybe saying Portland was a mistake or maybe he says something else. I have no doubt this show is labeled correctly due to Bruce’s story of meeting the owner of Beserkley Records but the start is odd. A pitch adjusted and slightly remastered “Badlands” from 'Community Spirit' has been added so this release is complete. It appears the first 34 seconds of “Badlands” from ‘Community Spirit’ is patched from another show, we have chosen to edit this out and fade it in at it’s accurate spot. Quality wise, we think it sounds terrific and have chosen to be very subtle with only a light eq’ing to give it a bit more punch but leaving the frequency spectrum wide. Every transfer of every show comes down to the individual listeners taste but we believe you’ll find this version has a more natural clean sound with plenty of punch and crispness with no distortion, we consider it a substantial material upgrade. Thanks to the usual suspects that put me in touch with Dan, their assistance and passion for Bruce and getting this music in your hands continues to be invaluable...IvannF, EarlMv, Oats1jvo and my compadre Butterking from JEMS for the use of the NAK DR-01. The biggest thanks go to Dan for making his archives available for us all to enjoy... mjk5510 Previous DS Archives Releases: Volume 01: Bruce Springsteen 1980-10-11 Chicago, IL (1st Gen) Volume 02: Bruce Springsteen 1975-09-21 Minneapolis, MN (2nd Gen) Volume 03: Bruce Springsteen 1975-08-01 Richmond, VA (Low Gen) Volume 04: Bruce Springsteen 1975-09-16 Dallas, TX (Low Gen) Volume 05: Bruce Springsteen 1975-09-16 Dallas, TX (Recorder 2 Un-circulated) Volume 06: Bruce Springsteen 1975-11-01 Santa Barbara, CA (2nd Gen) Volume 07: Bruce Springsteen 1975-10-04 Detroit, MI (1st Gen Aud Un-circulated) Volume 08: Bruce Springsteen 1975-12-05 Washington DC (Low Gen, presumed 2nd) Volume 09: Bruce Springsteen 1975-07-25 Kutztown, PA (Low Gen) Volume 10: Bruce Springsteen 1978-05-24 Albany, NY (Recorder 2 Un-circulated) Volume 11: Bruce Springsteen 1975-12-21 Toronto, ON (Low Gen) Volume 12: Bruce Springsteen 1976-09-29 Santa Monica, CA (Low Gen) Volume 13: Bruce Springsteen 1976-09-30 Santa Monica, CA (Low Gen) Volume 14: Bruce Springsteen 1976-10-25 Philadelphia (Recorder 2 Un-circulated) Volume 15: Bruce Springsteen 1977-03-13 Towson, MD (Recorder 3 Un-circulated) Volume 16: Bruce Springsteen 1978-05-27 Philadelphia (Recorder 2 Un-circulated) Volume 17: Bruce Springsteen 1978-06-03 Uniondale, NY (Recorder 4 Un-circulated) Volume 18: Bruce Springsteen 1978-05-23 Buffalo, NY (Low Gen Recorder 1) Volume 19: Bruce Springsteen 1978-06-08 Madison (Recorder 2 Un-circulated)
