Frankfurt 1981-04-14 Alternative tape source - 3rd of 3 known sources Recorder 1: LP "The Boss Hits The Badlands" Recorder 2: Master Tapes (LTB) / CDR "Shake" and "There You Go - DASUYE NHK LTD" (Recorder 1 & 2 could be mistaken for the same source but are different recorded in the same general location) Recorder 3: this tape transfer source (cre001/mjk5510) Early in 2013 I was in contact with mjk5510 about an alternative tape copy I had that was missing the first 3 songs. It turned out that he had previously transferred a set of tapes to CDR and these matched my copy but contained all the songs. He no longer had the tapes which were transferred before he bought his Nakamichi deck and were probably transferred using an Akai deck. 1980's tape trade > Akai GX R60EX > Cool Edit Pro > CDR > xACT > FLAC My own copy came as a 3 tape set from a record fair combined with the 1981 Stafford show. Based on the way songs were missing from both shows and the fast running of the Frankfurt show it appears great effort had been expended to fit onto 3 tapes. mjk5510 kindly sent me his copy for review and I agreed to take this show forward by releasing both the Boss Hits The Badlands source and this version. I found that the mjk5510 copy was superior to my copy in that the sound has much more depth but like mine was running fast though not as fast as my copy. In addition even though the mjk5510 was nearly musically complete there were some between song edits not on my copy with applause cut perhaps to allow fitting onto tape or CDs. For this show the circulating source (LTB master) is from reel to reel and is largely complete. The vinyl based The Boss Hits The Badlands matches with LTB quite well from a speed perspective so I have assumed the LTB source was probably correct for speed. I have had a number of goes at completing this show which has posed quite a technical challenge. My objective has been to syncronise this source with the LTB source and the majority of my effort has been with speed adjustments. This released version is not as close as I was looking to achieve but I did not want to hold onto it any longer. Issues with mjk5510 source The sound of the mjk5510 copy is fairly good but bright and unfortunately a bit shrill in places. My own copy is also bright but quite bass light in comparison. I notice that the noise background of the mjk5510 copy has a clear drop around 10k hz when reviewed in the spectral display which suggests some eq may have been applied. I have not done any eq other than for matching sections taken from the LTB source and my own copy. The original transfer had a left channel bias. I have used the azimuth correction tool in iZotope RX3 advanced to balance the sound individually on each track. Speed correction was applied individually to each track as per the table below. I restricted the corrections to a maximum of 2 per track using iZotope RX3. There is still some drift in places because the alternate source does have a lot of variability compared with the LTB source. mjk5510 copy patched with cre001 copy - mainly just applause between songs edit before 09 The Promised Land edit before 11 The River edit before 12 Badlands edit after 13 Thunder Road edit after 23 Rosalita edit after 25 Detroit Medley note that though my copy was much more complete for between song applause there were 2 tiny gaps after Rosalita and one after the Detroit Medley. I used iZotope to synthesise sound to fill the gaps but in a fairly obvious way so people know where the gaps were. The exact length of the applause is thus unknown and cannot be calculated because the LTB source did not fully cover these sections either. The splits at the end of Rosalita and the end of the Detroit Medley are placed on 2 of the gaps. The other is 40 seconds into Rosalita. common edits patched from LTB source after 09 The promised Land after 18 You Can Look after 20 Racing In The Street In addition a second azimuth adjustment was needed on Fire because of a sound inbalance part way through that track. Patched LTB versions of the River, Badlands, Cadillac Ranch and Rosalita are included to get that version more musically complete for those interested. I have not done any work with respect to CD burning so would suggest the opening set on the first CD and the encores after Rosalita on a third CD.
