1981-05-27 - THE BRIGHTON CENTRE, BRIGHTON, ENGLAND Upload by cre001 For the last few years Brucebase has included the following " Audience tape (Unbooted). Two versions circulate, the one which has better sound quality is missing "Hungry Heart". Last "The Price You Pay" until 2009, performed in the full-band arrangement" The alternate source mentioned does not appear to be in general circulation. I have 2 sets of tapes for this show. Both probably 2nd gen. The first set of tapes matches the main circulating version which was made available for the River Flood project and which is also widely available as a set of mp3s from a different transfer. The second set of tapes was actually dated 1981-05-26 with the title "Brighton Rock" but is the alternate source for the 27th. This alternate set of tapes has always been one of my favourites and I prefer them to the River Flood source. However they did have some problems which I have spent considerable effort trying to resolve as a audio mastering project and is the reason I have not made them available until now. When I first started uploading transfers I got in contact with mjk5510 who had a tape set for this show. It turned out his copy was also the alternate source and which addressed some of the issues with mine. He very kindly provided me with tracks I needed to patch my copy. The main issues with my copy of this alternate source were as follows 1. Hum on three tape sides with some buzz on the first tape side. While this is not hugely distracting its presence annoys me in quieter sections. Reduced using the remove hum module in iZotope RX3 advanced. 2. The start of The Promised Land was missing to about the same place as with the River Flood source. Patched from the mjk5510 copy. 3. A small but significant dropout of a couple of seconds during Stolen Car at 1.06 "out on the edge of town". Patched from the mjk5510 copy. 4. A 25 second gap during Rosalita at 8.02 after "bring it up" due to the track being split between 2 tape sides. Patched from the mjk5510 copy. 5. Some applause missing at both the end of Rosalita and beginning of Jungleland. Patched from the mjk5510 copy. 6. A few seconds of applause missing at the end of Jungleland along with Bruce thanking some of the band members. Patched from the mjk5510 copy. 7. Two very tiny dropouts on Who'll Stop The Rain and Stolen Car. Fixed using the spectral repair module in iZotope RX3 advanced. 8. The transition between Sherry Darling and Hungry Heart contains a rough edit possibly for tape transition. Left the transition on the "Raw" copy but did an edit in Audacity for the "Remastered" copy. 9. The second tape sounded duller relative to the first tape. I used the play trim facility on my Yamaha tape deck to boost the treble during the transfer. 10. Fire starts at the end of the first tape and finishes at the beginning of the second though with a generous overlap. Edited using Audacity. Playback used a Nakamichi DR-3 for the 1st tape of the alternate source and a Yamaha KX-480 deck with play trim positive for the second tape. Tape 1 was a Maxell UL90 and tape 2 a TDK D60. Dolby off for both tapes. Transfer used an external Furutech ADL GT40a analogue to digital converter set in Windows for 24/96 transfer. All other sound devices disabled. Recorded using iZotope RX3 Advanced with enabled ASIO ADL driver as internal 32bit float/96000 wav file and saved as a raw transfer. Edits performed using 24-96 files in Audacity and re-exported as 24-96 wav. Resample to 16-44 in iZotope RX3 and conversion to flac in TLH. Check for errors and SBE's in TLH. I was able to patch all the missing sections from the mjk5510 copy to effectively complete the source. The patch for Rosalita is a little rough due to the relative lack of fidelity of the infill. The patch at the start of The Promised Land has pitch stability issues but this is the only copy of the start currently available. Note that the channels were reversed on the mjk5510 copy so I swapped the channels from the mjk5510 copy for all patches. For the patching I used the EQ matching capability in iZotope Ozone 5 to force the patches to match the EQ of my own copy. The manual describes the cabability as "digital linear phase EQ, with the ability to use over 8,000 bands of frequencies for very precise matching". A by product of the process was that it also matched the background hiss quite closely to my own copy and also precisely eliminated some high frequency spikes. For situations like this where the patches are from the same source the eq matching is an effective tool. The "Raw" version includes the patches and spectral repairs but no other processing has been performed other than an azimuth adjustment and normalisation for channel balancing. The "Remastered" version has hum reduced and noise reduction to reduce the buzz on the first tape side and to bring the hiss down by 12 to 15 db on all tracks. Noise reduction used the higher quality "D" algorithm in iZotope RX3 advanced. I have great confidence in iZotope RX as a tool for reducing hiss though I am aware some people dislike any form of noise reduction. I have not tried to make the hiss inaudible but have lowered it to a more benign level.
