1984-07-31 - Joe Louis Arena, Detroit, MI (audience tape - alternate source) Brucebase has the following description "Audience tape. Three recording sources are known to exist, released on CDR 'They Can't Hurt Us Now' (Ev2) sourced from the master recording (persic). A second source released on CD 'No Used Cars In Motor City' (Piggham) and a third tape transfer source is in limited circulation." This is the third tape transfer source that I am now making available for general circulation. It is more complete than the Piggham source and does contain the very end of show which is missing from both the other sources. Tapes are of unknown generation from UK Record Fairs. I have 2 sets of tapes from different fairs. The major issue was a serious channel balance problem that could not be corrected by normal volume adjustments which may be the reason this source has not been circulating much. There are indications the people I got the tapes from tried to adjust for balance but with little success. One set of tapes had one side recorded at a very high level leading to analogue distortion. The tapes also had the channels flipped relative to the other set but I have not been able to verify which orientation is correct. These days audio edit software such as iZotope RX Advanced allow the balance to be corrected properly making things much more listenable. Following an azimuth adjustment quality is listenable but not great. This source is more for the completists. I am uploading 2 versions both of which have the azimuth adjustment. The first is otherwise unprocessed apart from normalization and conversion to 16/44. There is substantial tape hiss which I have tried to fix on a remastered version using iZotope RX3 noise reduction. There is still some hiss remaining and I am looking for ways to improve this but for this upload I am making this interim remastered version available for people who prefer not to have much hiss. I have also applied a speed adjustment to bring this version into line with the persic version which may be the more accurate for speed. The original speed is close to that of the Piggham source but that may be a little fast. I have not tried to edit any end of tape sides. There are considerable overlaps where a track starts at the end of a tape side and then begins again on the next tape. Playback Yamaha KX-480 Cassette Deck with dolby off. Playtrim neutral. External Furutech ADL GT40a analogue to digital converter set in Windows for 24/96 transfer. All other sound devices disabled. Recorded using iZotope RX3 Advanced with enabled ASIO ADL driver as internal 32bit float/96000 wav file and saved as a raw transfer to wav. Azimuth adjustment and normalisation using RX3. Resampled using RX3 and files converted to flac using CDWave. Tracks have been checked for errors and SBE's using TLH. 101-Born In The U.S.A 102-Out In The Street 103-Tenth Avenue Freeze Out 104-Atlantic City 105-Open All Night 106-Nebraska 107-Trapped 108-Prove It All Night 109-Glory Days 110-The Promised Land 111-Used Cars start 111-Used Cars 112-The River 201-Badlands 202-Thunder Road 203-Hungry Heart 204-Dancing In The Dark start 204-Dancing In The Dark 205-Cadillac Ranch 206-Sherry Darling 207-No Surrender 208-Because The Night 209-Growin' Up 210-Bobby Jean 211-Racing In The Street 301-Rosalita 302-I'm A Rocker 303-Jungleland start 303-Jungleland 304-Born To Run 305-Detroit Medley 306-Twist And Shout Thanks to mjk5510, hrubesh and KM (bosstrade) for help with identifying the alternate sources in circulation. When I first started work on this source the description on Brucebase re sources was confused but has since been corrected.
