Intro

Music and lyrics by Bruce Springsteen, CLUB SOUL CITY was donated to Gary U.S. Bonds for his 1982 album On The Line. See Gary U.S. Bonds' cover version for more details.

Springsteen's Version

Between Spring 1981 and Spring 1982, Bruce Springsteen spent much time laying down home demos at Thrill Hill Recording (Springsteen's home studio) in Colts Neck, NJ. These were non-professional home recordings most of which have first surfaced on The Lost Masters bootleg series released by the Labour Of Love label in 1996. CLUB SOUL CITY was one of the few that didn't make it on the series, but it later surfaced on the Fist Full Of Dollars bootleg released by E Street Records in 1998.

The above lyrics are for that 55-seconds circulating warm-up take of CLUB SOUL CITY. According to Brucebase, it was recorded sometime between mid-September and December 1981 at Thrill Hill Recording. It can be found on the Fistfull Of Dollars (E Street Records) and How Nebraska Was Born (The Godfatherecords) bootlegs.

According to Brucebase, a Bruce Springsteen vocal rendition of CLUB SOUL CITY was likely recorded at The Power Station in New York City, NY, during the January-February 1982 recording sessions with Gary U.S. Bonds – it's the same core recording with the E Street Band that's found on the Bonds album, but with the Springsteen lead vocal overdub.

Live History

CLUB SOUL CITY was sound-checked prior to the 21 Jun 1992 show in Milan, Italy, (see the 21 Jun 1992 sound-check version) and the 25 Jul 1992 show in East Rutherford, NJ, (as far as it's known) but it was not performed on any of World Tour 1992-1993's regular shows.
