DANCE DANCE DANCE

Live 23 Jul 1971 version

Everybody's grooving on the floor now
Feet's moving, think they're gonna dance
The band is playing as you walk in that door now
Come on now, won't you take that chance
I said come on now, won't you mama
Come on, won't you take that chance
There ain't nothing here that's gonna hound you
There ain't nothing to it, let your body go
(Dance, dance, dance)
(Dance, dance, dance)

And it don't take no concentration
And I swear that it's a miracle cure
??? summer vacation
When you get out there on the floor
Well come on now won't you, mama
Ah won't you take that chance
I remember the night beneath the pale moon light
When you had a few beers and you were hanging loose
Lets go crazy, ??? like a deuce
(Dance, dance, dance)
(Dance, dance, dance)

I want you to come on home now

[Instrumental]

(Dance floor, stop go, round and round)
(Feels so fine in summertime, once you try it you ain't fall down)
(Fast slow, stop go, around and around)
(Feels so fine in summertime, once you try it you ain't fall down)
(Fast slow, stop go, around and around)
(Feels so fine in summertime, once you try it you ain't fall down)

Now everybody's moving on the floor now
Feet's grooving, think they're gonna dance
And the band is playing as you walk in the door now
The music's got you hooked in a trance
Come on now, won't you mama
Come on, won't you take that chance
There ain't nothing out here that can harm you
There ain't nothing too it, let your body go
(Dance, dance, dance)
(Dance, dance, dance)
(Dance, dance, dance)
(Dance, dance)
Alright!
(Dance, dance, dance)

Info

DANCE DANCE DANCE is a song written by Bruce Springsteen. He performed it live with The Bruce Springsteen Band in 1971. The song was probably written in early 1971.

Live 23 Jul 1971 version

The above lyrics are for a live 23 Jul 1971 performance of DANCE DANCE DANCE at Damrosch Park in New York City, NY, with The Bruce Springsteen Band. The parts between parentheses are by female backing vocalists.

The Bruce Springsteen Band, along with several other un-signed groups, performed on 23 Jul 1971 at Damrosch Park as part of the Guggenheim Memorial Concert Series that took place daily in the park during the summer of 1971. Damrosch Park is an outdoor amphitheater at the Lincoln Center For The Performing Arts. In the park included is a bowl-style stage, known as the Guggenheim Band Shell, on which performances took place.

An excellent and almost certainly complete soundboard recording of the Bruce Springsteen Band's 23 Jul 1971 performance at Damrosch Park is in circulation among collectors.

Live History

DANCE DANCE DANCE is known to have been performed at least 4 times in Bruce Springsteen's early years (pre-October 1972). All of these confirmed performances are from 1971. Very little is known about shows from this early period, and therefore, the song may have been played on some more dates in 1971 and possibly in 1972.

  1. 10 Jul 1971 at Brookdale Community College, Lincroft, NJ (with The Bruce Springsteen Band)
  2. 23 Jul 1971 at Lincoln Center, New York City, NY (with The Bruce Springsteen Band)
  3. 29 Jul 1971 at D'Scene, South Amboy, NJ (with The Bruce Springsteen Band)
  4. 01 Sep 1971 at Garfield Park, Long Branch, NJ (with The Bruce Springsteen Band)

An early Bruce Springsteen handwritten song list (see scan below) is recalled with some degree of confidence by one of The Bruce Springsteen Band members as emanating from one of the band's July 1971 bookings at D'Scene in South Amboy, NJ. The Bruce Springsteen Band made two consecutive Thursday evening appearances at the club, on 22 and 29 July 1971. They headlined two gigs each night, one at 9:00 p.m. and one at 11:30 p.m., with Sunny Jim opening. The handwritten song list was auctioned on the It's Only Rock 'N Roll online auction website in June 2006. The bid started at $500.00 and reached $2221.44. The document contains a list of 22 songs, including DANCE DANCE DANCE. This is not a setlist, but many (or possibly all) of the listed songs must have been performed at the 22 and 29 Jul 1971 shows at D'Scene.
