The above lyrics are for the live 16 Dec 1978 performance of FIRE at Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco, CA, during the Darkness On The Edge Of Town Tour.
This live 16 Dec 1978 version of FIRE was included on the Live/1975-85 box set in 1986. The song is edited on this release, with the short spoken intro and the count-in removed and replaced by the short spoken intro from the live 07 Jul 1978 version. Additionally the part above in bold ("you say you wanna be alone") was altered, but it's unknown if it was patched in studio or using a live recording. The part between parentheses, sung by Steven Van Zandt, are not audible on the audience recording but can be clearly heard on the official release.It was also released as a single in 1987.
The live 16 Dec 1978 performance of FIRE and was included on the Greatest Hits (2009 Europe edition) compilation album and the Japanese Singles Collection -Greatest Hits- compilation album.
During the Darkness On The Edge Of Town Tour, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band performed two consecutive shows at Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco, CA, on 15 and 16 Dec 1978. According to Billboard magazine, both nights sold-out well in advance ─ a total of 10,800 tickets were sold with gross receipts of $80,975.
Winterland Ballroom opened in 1928 as an ice skating rink that could be converted into a seated entertainment venue. In 1971, concert promoter Bill Graham took over the facility. He renovated it and converted it to exclusive use as a 5,400-capacity music venue. At the end of 1978, Winterland Ballroom closed down. Graham explained to Billboard that spiraling costs in operating the facility, which is used only sporadically, along with continuing pressure from various Fillmore District neighborhood organizations, are the reasons for the closing. To commemorate the final days of use of Winterland Ballroom, Gragam booked shows nearly every night in December 1978. Acts included Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Kenny Loggins, Ramones, Greg Kihn Band, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Blondie, and Grateful Dead, among others.
According to Brucebase, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band's two shows at Winterland Ballroom may have been filmed on the in-house video system, but no concrete evidence has ever emerged that indicate that this is the case. There is plenty of video footage of other artists at the venue from around the same period, but the most likely scenario is that any film of those two night was lost in a fire at Bill Graham's San Francisco warehouse offices in 1985. It is possible that a copy may still reside in Springsteen's vaults.
An audience recording of the 16 Dec 1978 concert has long circulated among fans. A lower-generation source of that tape entered circulation in 2018. FIRE was officially on the Live/1975-85 box set and soundboard recordings of THUNDER ROAD, JUNGLELAND, IT'S HARD TO BE A SAINT IN THE CITY, and SANTA CLAUS IS COMIN' TO TOWN have been included on some bootleg releases.
In December 2019, the complete 16 Dec 1978 concert was officially released on Live.BruceSpringsteen.net (see the "Official Live Downloads" section below for more details). The concert was recorded live with the Record Plant Remote Truck by Pete Carlson and Jimmy Iovine. The 2-inch, multi-track master reels transferred by Jamie Howarth in 2019 at Plangent Processes, with audio engineering by Jon Altschiller and additional engineering by Danielle Warman. The recording was mastered to DSD and PCM Adam Ayan at Gateway Mastering Studios in Portland, ME.
Prior to the High Hopes Tour, Bruce Springsteen's management announced a new service allowing fans to download concert recordings approximately 48 hours after each show. The initial plan required fans to purchase a special USB wristband, which could then be used to download a single High Hopes Tour show of the purchaser's choice and also functions as a regular reusable USB flash drive. The wristband, which could be purchased online or at the concert venue, was priced at $40. Following some negative response from fans over the high cost for the wristband, Springsteen's management subsequently announced a separate cheaper option for purchasing shows directly, without the need for the wristband. The shows were available for purchase and download via Live Nation, Bruce Springsteen's concert promoter, priced at $9.99 for MP3 and $14.99 for FLAC. Audio recordings for 31 of the 34 High Hopes Tour dates (all except 16 Feb 2014, 06 Apr 2014, and 03 May 2014) were released as such and they were available until 30 Jun 2014.
On 17 Nov 2014, Live.BruceSpringsteen.net was launched. It's a new addition to the official website, serving as an online store offering high-quality live concert recordings as well as high-resolution digital releases of Springsteen's album catalog. The download store is powered by Nugs.net in cooperation with Columbia Records. Audio recordings for 30 of the 34 High Hopes Tour dates (all except 16 Feb 2014, 06 Apr 2014, 03 May 2014, and 18 May 2014) were re-released on the new download store in multiple formats, including MP3, lossless CD-quality FLAC or ALAC, and 24-bit HD FLAC or ALAC or MQA, as well as audio CD-R with custom artwork. Nugs.net adopted the MQA (Master Quality Authenticated) format on 24 May 2017. From then on, all Bruce Springsteen live concert recordings, including the previously released ones, became also available in MQA.

With the Born In The U.S.A. album and tour, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band reached the highest level of rock stardom. Columbia Records was expecting a follow up studio album and tour that would, like it's predecessor, achieve a huge commercial success. Instead, Springsteen released Live/1975-85, an over-three-hours-and-a-half-long live compilation album consisting of 40 tracks recorded at various concerts between 1975 and 1985.
The set was produced by Jon Landau, Chuck Plotkin, and Bruce Springsteen, and hit the stores on 10 Nov 1986. It was released as a box set with either five vinyl records, three cassettes, or three CDs. Live/1975-85 is the first album to be credited to "Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band" instead of "Bruce Springsteen" only.
The highly-anticipated live album generated advance orders of more than 1.5 million copies, making it the largest dollar-volume pre-order in the history of the record business at the time. Record stores around the country found fans waiting in line on Monday morning before opening and one New York store reportedly sold the album right off the back of the delivery truck. The album debuted at #1 on the Billboard album chart and also became the first five-record set to reach the top 10 and the first to sell over a million copies. Live/1975-85 is the second-best-selling live album in U.S. history based on RIAA certification. It has been certified by the RIAA for 13 times platinum, trailing only Garth Brooks' Double Live.

The live 16 Dec 1978 version of FIRE was also released as a single in 1987. In North America and the Philippines, INCIDENT ON 57TH STREET [Live 29 Dec 1980 version] was the single's b-side. In Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan, the single had an alternate configuration with FOR YOU [Live 07 Jul 1978 version] on the b-side instead. A 5-track 12-inch EP version of the Fire single was also released in the UK, Holland, Spain, Greece, and Australia.
The live 16 Dec 1978 version of FIRE was also released on the Mexican issue of the War EP in 1986.
Greatest Hits (2009 edition) is a compilation album released by Columbia Records on 13 Jan 2009 in the United State where it was sold exclusively through Wal-Mart retailers. The album was also released (but non-exclusively) in Canada. Unlike the 1995 Greatest Hits release and The Essential Bruce Springsteen in 2003, this compilation was billed to "Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band" instead of just "Bruce Springsteen". The album contains 12 previously released studio tracks and clocks at 53:08.
On 01 Jun 2009, Columbia Records released a European edition of the compilation album with an alternative track listing to promote Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band's European leg of the Working On A Dream Tour. The European edition was also released in Israel and Mexico, and in Australia in August 2009. The album comes in a standard jewel case, but a limited digipack edition was also released in Europe. Greatest Hits (2009 European edition) contains 16 previously released studio tracks and 2 live bonus tracks taken from the Live/1975-85 box set. It clocks at 79:03.
The album charted in several countries, but only made it to # 1 in Sweden. In general, the album did much better in Europe than in North America.
Japanese Singles Collection -Greatest Hits- is a Bruce Springsteen compilation album released by Sony Music Japan in 2023. The compilation, which was exclusively released in Japan, consists of previously released 35 audio tracks and 62 video tracks. The collection is part of a 26-title reissue campaign to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Bruce Springsteen's debut album. The series, issued in three waves (25 Oct 2023, 22 Nov 2023, and 20 Dec 2023), includes 25 albums originally released between 1973 and 2014 plus a new compilation album that includes all of Springsteen's singles released in Japan from 1975 to 1999. All audio CD's were manufactured using Sony Japan's Blu-spec CD2 format.
