HAVING A PARTY

Live 13 May 1977 (early show) version

[Steve Van Zandt:] Are you ready out there? They're ready! You ready? Ready!

[Van Zandt (with Springsteen on backup vocals:]
We're havin' a party
Everybody's swingin'
Dancin' to the music
On the radio (whoo, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh)
So listen (listen), Mister DJ
Keep those records playin'
'Cause I'm havin' such a good time
Dancin' with my baby

We're havin' a party
Dancin' to the music
Played by the DJ
On the radio
And there's Coke's in the icebox
The popcorn's on the table
Me and my baby
Are out here on the floor, ooh

We're havin' a party
Everybody's swingin'
Dancin' to the music
On the radio
So listen, Mister DJ
Keep those records playin'
'Cause I'm havin' a good time
Dancin' with my baby
Yeah

Everybody's swingin'
I know that you'll do the Twist (do it, now)
If you take requests, now
Well, I have got a few for you
[Bruce Springsteen:] Just play that one called the "Soul Twist"
Play that song called "I Know"
[Steve Van Zandt:] Clarence, you got it!
[Clarence Clemons:] Don't forget "The Mashed Potato"!
[Steve Van Zandt:] No other song will do

[Van Zandt (with Springsteen on backup vocals):]
We're havin' a party
Everybody's swingin'
Dancin' to the music
On the radio
So listen, Mister DJ
Keep those records playin'
'Cause I'm havin' such a good time
Dancin' with my baby
Say hey, do it!

Everybody's swinging, baby
I know this girl will do the twist, now
If you take requests
Well, I, I think the Boss has got a few for you
[Bruce Springsteen:] Hey, go on, play that one called "Soul Twist"
[Steve Van Zandt:] Oh, yeah!
[Bruce Springsteen:] And play that other one called "I Know"
[Steve Van Zandt:] Oh, yeah!
[Bruce Springsteen:] And don't forget "The Mashed Potato"!
[Steve Van Zandt:] Oh, I don't know!
[Bruce Springsteen:] No other song will do! Hey!

[Van Zandt (with Springsteen singing backup):]
We're havin' a party
Everybody's swingin'
Dancin' to the music
Yeah, on the radio
Ooh!
So listen, Mister DJ
Keep those records playin'
'Cause I'm havin' a good time
Dancin' with my baby
Can we take it up?

We're havin' a party
Everybody's swingin'
Dancin' to the music
Oh, on the radio
So listen, Mister DJ
Keep those records playin'
'Cause I'm havin' a good time
Dancin' with my baby
One more time!

We're havin' a party
Everybody's swingin'
Dancin' to the music
Oh, on the radio
Yeah, yeah, yeah
So listen, Mister DJ
Keep those records playin'
'Cause I'm havin' such a good time
Dancin' with my baby
Well, I'm havin' such a good time
Dancin' with my baby
Well, I'm havin' such a good time
Dancin', whoa, whoa
Whoa, whoa
Whoa, whoa, ooh, ooh
Said I'm dancin'
I said I'm dancin'
With my baby

All right, baby, it's all right, baby, it's all right
[Bruce Springsteen:] Baby, it's all right
[Steve Van Zandt:] Baby, it's all right
[Bruce Springsteen:] Baby, it's all right
[Steve Van Zandt:] Baby, it's all right
[Bruce Springsteen:] Whoa!
[Steve Van Zandt:] Baby, it's all right, it's all right, it's all
right, it's all right, baby, it's all right, (it's all right) it's all right, it's all right, it's
all right, (whoa) baby, it's all right, it's all right, it's all right, it's all right, it's all
right, it's all right, it's all right, baby, it's all right

[Bruce Springsteen:] Hey, Stevie! It's all right!

[Steve Van Zandt:] Thank you, thank you very much! Goodnight.

Info

The above lyrics are for the live 13 May 1977 early show performance of HAVING A PARTY at Monmouth Arts Center in Red Bank, NJ. The song was performed with The Asbury Park All-Star Revue. Steve Van Zandt was on lead vocals and Bruce Springsteen on guitar and backup vocals.

Four Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes gigs were scheduled on 12 and 13 May 1977 (two shows each night) at Monmouth Arts Center in Red Bank, NJ. Southside fell ill and couldn't perform, so Steve Van Zandt came to the rescue by organizing The Asbury Park All-Star Revue, a combination of the Asbury Jukes, the E Street Band, Ronnie Spector, and Bruce Springsteen. The first night's two shows were rearranged into a single concert.
