JAMBALAYA (ON THE BAYOU)

Original Hank Williams version

Good-bye, Joe, me gotta go, me oh my oh
Me gotta go pole the pirogue down the bayou
My Yvonne, the sweetest one, me oh my oh
Son of a gun, we'll have big fun on the bayou

Jambalaya and a crawfish pie and filet gumbo
'Cause tonight I'm gonna see my ma cher amio
Pick guitar, fill fruit jar and be gay-o
Son of a gun, we'll have big fun on the bayou

Thibodaux, Fontaineaux, the place is buzzin'
Kinfolk come to see Yvonne by the dozen
Dress in style and go hog wild, me oh my oh
Son of a gun, we'll have big fun on the bayou

Jambalaya and a crawfish pie and filet gumbo
'Cause tonight I'm gonna see my ma cher amio
Pick guitar, fill fruit jar and be gay-o
Son of a gun, we'll have big fun on the bayou

Settle down far from town, get me a pirogue
And I'll catch all the fish in the bayou
Swap my mon to buy Yvonne what she need-o
Son of a gun, we'll have big fun on the bayou

Jambalaya and a crawfish pie and filet gumbo
'Cause tonight I'm gonna see my ma cher amio
Pick guitar, fill fruit jar and be gay-o
Son of a gun, we'll have big fun on the bayou

As far as it's known, Bruce Springsteen performed JAMBALAYA (ON THE BAYOU) live twice during career:

  • On 11 Oct 1998 at Springsteen's residence in Colt's Neck, NJ. This was a belated outdoor birthday bash for Bruce at his farm property that was originally planned for 23 Sep 1998 but had been delayed due to poor weather. NYC-based Cajun-roots band The Gotham Playboys provided the entertainment, and Bruce joined them for several songs including JAMBALAYA (IT'S ALL OVER). There is no circulating audio recording from that performance.
  • 18 Dec 2000 at the Convention Hall, Asbury Park, NJ. This was the second of the two 2000 Christmas holiday shows. JAMBALAYA (ON THE BAYOU) was reported to be sound-checked acoustically, but it was not played on the show. There is no circulating audio recording from that sound-check.

The above lyrics are for the original Hank Williams version of JAMBALAYA (ON THE BAYOU).

This Hank Williams song is named for a Louisiana Creole dish of Spanish and French creation. Not to be confused with the Springsteen 1971 composition JUMBELIAH (ROLL OVER).
