LIVIN' IN THE FUTURE

Live 28 Sep 2007 (morning) version

One! Two!

[Spoken intro:] Good morning everybody! (cheers) And all ships at sea. I must really wanna sell some records bad to be up here this early singing, singing these songs. It's, it's a little desperate but it's alright. But uh, this is a song called "Livin' in the Future" but it's really about what's happening now, right now. It's kind of about how the things that we love about America -- cheeseburgers, French fries, the Yankees battling Boston, the Bill Of Rights, Beachwood Motorcycles, Tim Russert's haircut, trans fats, the Jersey Shore... about how we love all those things the way that the women folk love on Matt Lauer. That's right. But over the past six years we've had to add to the American picture rendition, illegal wiretapping, voter suppression, no Habeas Corpus, the neglect of our great city New Orleans and her people, and an attack on the Constitution and the loss of our best young men and women in a tragic war. This is a song about things that shouldn't happen here happening here. And so right now we plan to do something about it, we plan to sing about it. I know it's early but it's late, so come and join us. Max, gimme it!

A letter come blowing in on an ill wind
Something 'bout me and you never seeing one another again
Yeah, well I knew it'd come, still I was struck deaf and dumb
Like when we kissed, that taste of blood on your tongue

Don't worry darling, now baby don't you fret
We're living in the future and none of this has happened yet
Don't worry darling, now baby don't you fret
We're living in the future and none of this has happened yet

Woke up election day, skies gunpowder and shades of grey
Beneath a dirty sun I whistle my time away
Then just about sundown you come walking through town
Your boot heels clicking like the barrel of a pistol spinning round

Don't worry darling, now baby don't you fret
We're living in the future and none of this has happened yet
Don't worry darling, now baby don't you fret
We're living in the future and none of this has happened yet

The earth it gave away, the sea rose towards the sun
I opened up my heart to you, it got all damaged and undone
My ship Liberty sailed away on a bloody red horizon
The groundskeeper opened the gates and let the wild dogs run

Bring it down for me, boys!

I'm rolling through town, a lost cowboy at sundown
Got my monkey on a leash, got my ear tuned to the ground
My faith's been torn asunder, tell me is that rolling thunder
Or just the sinking sound of something righteous going under

Don't worry darling, now baby don't you fret
We're living in the future and none of this has happened yet
Don't worry darling, now baby don't you fret
We're living in the future and none of this has happened yet
None of this has happened yet
None of this has happened yet
None of this has happened yet
None of this has happened yet

Come on, Steve, now!
Say!

Sha na na na, sha na na na-na
Sha na na na, na na na na-na
(Na na na na, na na na na-na)
Sha na na na, (na na na na-na)
