MY GENERATION

Live 30 Sep 1967 version

One two three four!

People try to put us down (Talking 'bout my generation)
Just because we get around (Talking 'bout my generation)
Things they do just turning cold (Talking 'bout my generation)
I hope I die before I get old (Talking 'bout my generation)

This is my generation
This is my generation
This is my generation

Why don't you all fade away (Talking 'bout my generation)
Don't try to dig what we all say (Talking 'bout my generation)
I'm not trying to cause a s-s-sensation (Talking 'bout my generation)
I'm just talking 'bout my g-g-generation (Talking 'bout my generation)

This is my generation
This is my generation
This is my generation

People try to put us down (Talking 'bout my generation)
Just because we get around (Talking 'bout my generation)
I'm not trying to cause a s-s-sensation (Talking 'bout my generation)
I'm just talking 'bout my g-g-generation (Talking 'bout my generation)

This is my generation
This is my generation
This is my generation

Why don't you all fade away (Talking 'bout my generation)
And don't try to dig what we all s-say (Talking 'bout my generation)
Things they do look awful c-cold (Talking 'bout my generation)
I hope I die before I get old (Talking 'bout my generation)

This is my generation
This is my generation
This is my generation
This is my generation
This is my generation
This is my generation

Live 30 Sep 1967 version

The above lyrics are for the live 30 Sep 1967 version of MY GENERATION at The Left Foot in Freehold, NJ, with The Castiles. The song was played with Springsteen on lead vocals.

This was The Castiles' second gig at The Left Foot, a newly opened "over 13, under 18" club located in the recreation center of St. Peter's Episcopal Church at 37 Throckmorton Street. The show was a double-bill, with The Castiles headlining. About 26 minutes out of the band's one-hour performance were recorded by the club's manager (and St. Peter's priest) Fred Coleman on a good quality reel-to reel device. The audio is now in circulation among collectors, but the sound quality is inferior to the original master tape which is not in circulation.

Live History

In his 2012 book E Street Shuffle: The Glory Days of Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, Clinton Heylin quoted Tex Vinyard, The Castiles' manager, saying: "Soon, we let Bruce sing 'Mystic Eyes' and The Who's 'My Generation'. That's how we got the booking in New York." Vinyard was referring to the extensive series of about 30 shows The Castiles played at Café Wha? in New York City, NY between late 1966 and early 1968.

MY GENERATION is known to have been performed at least once in Springsteen's early years, on 30 Sep 1967 in Freehold, NJ, with The Castiles. Very little is known about shows from this early period, and therefore, the song may have been played on some more dates in 1967 and 1968.
