NEW YORK CITY SERENADE

Live 07 Nov 2009 version

[Spoken intro to The Wild, The Innocent, & The E Street Shuffle album performance:]

Thank you, everybody, thanks for being here tonight! We got the last eight shows of our, of our tour going now. We've been on the road for, uh, between these two records, for a couple of years, we appreciate everybody coming out and supporting us, and, uh, as we've gotten toward the close here we were trying to think what we could do that'd be a nice treat for the fans and fun for us. So we've been, uh, playing a variety of different records a night, we've played Born To Run, we've played Born In The U.S.A., Darkness On The Edge Of Town, but tonight, we're gonna do something that's never been done before! Never! Ever! I hope we can do it! (laughs) This was a record, this was the second record that I made, and, uh, it came out, it didn't do that well, um, but it was an interesting record, it was sort of, half of the songs are kind of about, are sort of set in New Jersey and around our little, our little street corner: uh, E Street Shuffle, Sandy, uh, Wild Billy's Circus Story, uh, Rosie, those are all our New Jersey songs. And the other half were sort of my romantic ideas and fantasies of New York City, of Kitty's Back, and New York City Serenade, and Incident. So, uh, here we go! This is, uh, this is The Wild, The Innocent, & The E Street Shuffle!

[Performs THE E STREET SHUFFLE]

[Performs 4TH OF JULY, ASBURY PARK (SANDY)]

[Performs KITTY'S BACK]

[Performs WILD BILLY'S CIRCUS STORY]

[Performs INCIDENT ON 57TH STREET]

[Performs ROSALITA (COME OUT TONIGHT)]

[NEW YORK CITY SERENADE:]

Billy, he's down by the railroad tracks
Sitting low in the back seat of his Cadillac
Diamond Jackie, she's so intact
And she falls so softly beneath him
Jackie's heels are stacked
Billy's got cleats on his boots
Together they're gonna boogaloo down Broadway
And come back home with the loot
It's midnight in Manhattan, this is no time to get cute, it's a mad dog's promenade
So walk tall
Or baby, don't walk at all

Fish lady, fish lady, she baits them tenement walls
She won't take corner boys, they got no money, and they're so easy
I said, "Hey, baby, won't you take my hand, walk with me down Broadway?"
Oh, mama, won't you take my arm and move with me down Broadway?
I'm a young man, and I talk real loud, yeah, and I walk it real proud for you
So shake away
Shake away your street life, shake away your city life
And hook up to the train, hook up to the night train
Yeah, hook it up, oh, yeah, and let's hook up to the train, hook up to the night train
But she won't take the train, no, she won't take the train
Oh, she won't take the train, no, she won't take the train
No, she won't take the train, no, she won't take the train
She's afraid them tracks are gonna slow her down
And when she turns, this boy'll be gone
Sometimes you gotta walk on
Walk on

Hey, vibes man, hey, jazz man, play me your serenade
Any deeper blue and you're playin' in your grave
Save your notes: don't spend 'em on the blues boys
Save your notes: don't spend 'em on the darlin' yearlin' blues boys
Straight for that church note, ring it, vibes man sting a trash can
Listen to your junkman
Yeah, listen to your junkman
Come on and listen to your junkman
He's singin' (singin')
Singin' (singin')
Singin' (singin')
All dressed up in satin, walking down the alley (singin', singin')
He's singin', singin', singin', singin'
He's singin', singin', sing, yeah, (singin')
He's singin', singin', singin', singin'
He's singin', singin', sing, yeah, (singin')
He's singin', singin', singin', (singin')
He's singin', singin', singin', (singin')

He's singin', he's singin', he's singin', he's singin', he's singin', he's singin'

[Spoken outro:] Thank you! Richard Blackwell on the congas! Played on the original record! We were baby boys together (chuckles) from the neighborhood! Don't be talking 'bout me, now! (chuckles) Sam Bardfeld and the strings! Stand up, take a bow! Yes, yes! Thank you. Thank you, you did a great job. And Curt Ramm and the horn section! Come on out. Take a bow, men! Yes! Oh... And the mighty E Street Band, with the Big Man!

Info

The above lyrics are for the live 07 Nov 2009 performance of NEW YORK CITY SERENADE at Madison Square Garden in New York City, NY, during the Working On A Dream Tour. The song was played in a full-band arrangement including an album-style piano introduction played by Roy Bittan and featuring guests Richard Blackwell on conga (as on the song's studio recording) and Sam Bardfeld's eight-piece string section playing the album string arrangement. Because the entire The Wild, The Innocent, & The E Street Shuffle album was performed on this show from start to finish and in sequence, and because of the guest performers, this is easily the closest to the album arrangement that NEW YORK CITY SERENADE has ever been performed live.
