OUTSIDE LOOKING IN

Unofficial studio version

...three, four

So now (the times that we had)
I ain't sorry (feeling just too mad)
You walk real pretty and you talk real fine
But night after night we're on the line
My life's the same story, again and again
I'm on the outside looking in
On the outside looking in

Hey, you may believe it ain't real
I don't doubt the way I feel
You walk real pretty and you talk real sweet
Well baby I was born in the driving seat
My life's the same story, again and again
I'm on the outside looking in
The outside looking in
Yes I'm on the outside looking in
Whoa!

So now (the times that we had)
I ain't sorry (feeling just too mad)
You walk real pretty and you talk real fine
But night after night we're on the line
My life's the same story, beginning to end
Beginning to end
I'm on the outside looking in (on the outside looking in)
Yes I' m on the outside looking in (I'm on the outside looking in)
Yes I am (on the outside looking in)
Yes I guess I am (on the outside looking in)
Yes I guess I am (on the outside looking in)
Yes I guess I am (on the outside looking in)
Well baby I'm on the outside looking in

Info

Prior to the release of The Promise in 2010, one studio take of OUTSIDE LOOKING IN had been circulating on bootlegs. It was recorded in June 1977 at Atlantic Studios in New York City, NY. It is a very rough early take with an uneven mix and some off-key harmony vocals by Steven Van Zandt. The above lyrics are for that unofficial studio version of OUTSIDE LOOKING IN. In verses 1 and 2 and the beginning of verse 3, Springsteen double tracks his own background vocals. In the final refrain, Steven Van Zandt takes over the background vocals (the parts in bold).

This unofficial studio version of OUTSIDE LOOKING IN can be found on The Definitive Darkness Outtakes Collection (E. St. Records) [disc 1, track 11] and Darkness Outtakes 1978 Vol. 1: The Iceman (Scorpio) [track 05] bootlegs.
