LOOK TOWARDS THE LAND Transcribed and researched by SpringsteenLyrics.com

Live 17 Mar 1972 version

Well I dreamed I was a gypsy riding the land
With a tambourine and a gypsy queen and a rainbow caravan
Just an old land sailor, that's what I wanna be
Stealing diamonds from the rich men to throw in the sea

Singing look towards the land
'Cause the land is the key
Keep an eye on the land
And an eye on me

Well I dreamed I was the cabin boy on an American clipper line
Bringing cargo down in the colony of South Caroline
Watering flowers for the captain that they may not wilt
On the best ol' clipper Donald McKay ever built

Singing look towards the land
'Cause the land holds
Keep an eye on the land
And an eye on the sea

Yes I dreamed I was the captain of a river queen
Caressing Mississippi waters down to New Orleans
Just a riverboat captain, that's all I wanna be
Won't you all come on down, I'll let you ride my mama for free

Singing look toward the river
'Cause the river is the key
Keep an eye on the river
And an eye on the sea

And don't you know that a ???

Where the river flows, I will follow
Where the sun shines, I will go
Mama take my hand, I wanna bring you to the land
Where the wild wind blows
And the mountains grow
And the people know
Yes they know
You gotta let the river flow
Let the

Where the river flows, I will follow
Where the sun shines, I will go
And mama take my hand, I wanna bring you the land
Where the wild wind blows
And the mountains grow
And the people know
Yes they know
Must that river flow
Gotta let them rivers flow

And I dreamed I was a bird flying high
And I drift down to the earth and I let myself fly
???
??? and I wonder wonder why

Look toward
And the sky is the key
Keep an eye on the river
And an eye on the sea

Well I dreamed I was your lover 'cause that's what I wanna be
I dreamed that every night you dreamed only of me
We walked together along the beach, a hand held in hand
I told you you were my only woman and I'd be your only man

Singing look towards the lovers
For they are the key
Keep an eye on the lovers
And an eye on the war machine

The above lyrics are for the live 17 Mar 1972 performance of LOOK TOWARDS THE LAND at Richmond Arena, Richmond, VA, with the Bruce Springsteen Band.

This was a quadruple bill show, with the Bruce Springsteen Band opening the evening's festivities for Bang, The Mike Quatro Jam Band, and Mitch Ryder & Detroit. According to Brucebase, this was a festival-styled show, with each act allocated 80 to 90 minutes time slots. Although Mitch Ryder & Detroit were top-billed, it was electronic space music favorite Mike Quatro (70's rocker Suzi Quatro's brother) who performed last. In an attempt to minimize the 6,500-seat Richmond Arena's notorious echo problems, the promoter revamped the seating layout to 4,500. However an article in the following day's paper noted a turnout of only about 1,000. A newspaper review of the show briefly mentions Springsteen and notes the wide variety of styles performed in his set. The audio evidence certainly supports that assessment.

A 9-song / 83-minute good quality soundboard audio from this show is in circulation. For many years, this show's audio was incorrectly attributed to a Nov 1970 Steel Mill gig in Richmond.
