NO SURRENDER©

Live 01 Nov 2004 version

Well we busted out of class
Had to get away from those fools
We learnt more from a three minute record
Than we ever learnt in school
Tonight I hear the neighbourhood drummer sound
I can feel my heart begin to pound
You say you're tired and you just wanna close your eyes
And follow your dreams down

Well we made a promise we swore we'd always remember
No retreat baby, no surrender
Like soldiers on a winters night with a vow to defend
No retreat baby, no surrender

Well now young faces grow sad and old and hearts of fire they grow cold
We swore blood brothers against the wind now I'm ready to grow young again
Hear your sisters voice calling us home across the open yards
Well maybe we could cut someplace of our own with these drums and these guitars

Well we made a promise we swore we'd always remember
No retreat baby, no surrender
Blood brothers on a stormy night with a vow to defend
No retreat baby, no surrender

La la, la la la
La la, la la la
La la la la la la la, la la

Out on the street tonight the lights are growing dim
The walls of my room are closing in
There's a war outside still raging you say it ain't ours anymore to win
I wanna sleep beneath the peaceful skies in my lovers bed
With a wide open country in my eyes, and these dreams

Well we made a promise we swore we'd always remember
No retreat baby, no surrender
Blood brothers on a stormy night with a vow to defend
No retreat baby, no surrender
No retreat baby, no surrender
No retreat baby, noooooooooo surrender
Vote for change!

The above lyrics refer to the 01 Nov 2004 acoustic performance at John Kerry's Fresh Start for America Rally in Cleveland, OH. Note the interesting change Bruce made to the last verse. He changes "romantic dreams" to just "dreams". I think that's a deliberate change by Bruce to reflect over the country and presidential subject and such.

Check also the album's version (more details) and the Live 1975-85 version.

Thanks Timmy Petersson (Terry at Greasy Lake) for the lyrics and the notes.
