PINK CADILLAC©Natalie Cole's versionYou may think I'm foolin' Page last updated: 24 Feb 2010IntroThe most famous version of PINK CADILLAC is Natalie Cole's cover which she recorded in an R&B style. She released it on her 1987 album Everlasting and became a Top 10 hit single the following year. Recording and ReleaseIn the mid-eighties Natalie Cole recorded PINK CADILLAC at the suggestion of producer Dennis Lambert. Cole recalls: "I thought to myself, 'I'm too old to be doing this kind of stuff' [...] but then I'd never worked with anyone quite like Dennis before. He was very passionate about his work [and] his enthusiasm gave me the confidence that I could pull [the song] off." The track was intended for an album release on Modern Records but the project was canceled and Cole's PINK CADILLAC was later released on her 1987 album Everlasting on EMI-Manhattan Records. The track was the album's third single, released in March 1988 and returning Cole to the Top 10 for the first time since 1978. In April 1988 the single peaked at #5. It also reached #9 on the Hot R&B chart, #16 on the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart and - via a remix by David Cole and Robert Clivilles - #1 on Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart. The song was also a #5 UK Singles Chart pop hit across the Atlantic. According to Cole, "word got back" to her that Bruce Springsteen "thought it was very cool that a woman could [sing 'Pink Cadillac'] and it would come out so great". Official ReleasesNatalie Cole's Everlasting album was originally released on 14 Jun 1987 on EMI-Manhattan Records. It was reissued in June 1991 on Elektra Records.
Cole's PINK CADILLAC was released on singles worldwide. EP's included various mixes of the song including "Album Version", "Club Vocal", "Bass It Dub", "Radio Edit", "Ignition Megamix", "7-inch Turbo Mix", and "12-inch Mix". A UK-only 12-inch EP titled "Motorway Mixes" included a medley of Cole's PINK CADILLAC (Ignition Megamix) combined with her earlier hit JUMP START.
Cole's PINK CADILLAC was included on her Greatest Hits - Volume I compilation album, which was released in 2000 on the Elektra Records label. The song also made it on numerous various artists compilations.
