SEASIDE BAR SONG

a.k.a. COUPE DELUXE

One, two, three, four

Well Billy brought a Chevy '40 coupe deluxe
Chrome wheels, stick shift, give her gas, pop the clutch
Little girls on the corner like a diamond they shine
Someday Billy I'm gonna make 'em all mine

Hey girl, you wanna ride in Daddy's Cadillac
'Cause I love the way your long hair falls down your back
Bo Diddley, Bo Diddley at the Seaside Bar
We'll run barefoot in the sand and listen to his guitar

You say your mama's gonna meet you when the morning comes
Yeah, and papa's gonna beat you 'cause he knows you're out on the run
I'm gonna live a life of love and tonight you're the one
The highway is alive tonight so baby do not be frightened
There's something about a pretty girl on a sweet summer night
That gets this boy excited
The radio man finally understands and plays you something you can move to
You lay back easy, cut loose your drive power
Your girl leans over says "Daddy can you turn that radio up any louder?"
Ahhhh the juke joints hummin', everybody came down
Little Willie and the Soul Brooms layin' all his stuff down
Well don't let that daylight steal your soul
Get in your wheels and roll, roll, roll, roll, roll, roll
Oh that's right now
Oh go on, go on, go on,
Oh mama's gonna meet you when the morning comes
And your daddy's gonna beat you 'cause he knows you're out on the run
But I don't care, I wanna live a life of love while the nights still young
Allllll right now

This song was recorded on 28 Jun 1973 at the 914 Sound Studios, Blauvelt, New York City. This song was to feature on The Wild, The Innocent, And The E Street Shuffle until it was blocked by Columbia. Extra backing vocals and an added count-in were added on the original mix before it was published on Tracks in 1998. Never played live before the Conventional Hall shows on 03 Dec 2001 at the Asbury Park Convention Hall, Asbury Park, New Jersey.

Another demo featuring the E-Street band, probably the most up-tempo of Bruce's early songs and an indicator of the Born To Run period.

Available on:

  1. Tracks (disc 1- track 7)
  2. 18 Tracks (track 2)
  3. Tribute 1997: One Step Up / Two Steps Back: The Songs Of Bruce Springsteen (disc 2- track 12), performed by Little Bob Story*

* The Little Bob Story studio version of this song was in poor condition, and the 24-track masters proved difficult to locate. So Little Bob found the live version and remixed it in Paris in 1997, the release year of One Step Up / Two Steps Back: The Songs Of Bruce Springsteen.

Liner notes from the One Step Up / Two Steps Back: The Songs Of Bruce Springsteen tribute booklet:

Wile touring England with Little Bob Story in May of 1978, my publisher played me a demo of five unreleased Springsteen songs. "Seaside Bar Son" reminded me of my hometown, Le Havre (on the northwest coast of France), and all the good times I used to spend there with my friends at the bars by the sea. I was already a Springsteen fan, so I was exited when I received permission to record the song. It was quickly recorded in a small studio near Brighton, England and released by RCA/France in Oct of 1978 on our album Come See Me.
