YOUNGSTOWN©
Live 29 Jun 2000 version
Here in northeast Ohio, back in eighteen-o-three
Well James and Dan Heaton found the ore that was linin' Yellow Creek
They built a blast furnace here along the shore
And they made the cannon balls that helped the Union win the war
Here in Youngstown, here in Youngstown
My sweet Jenny I'm sinkin' down
Here darlin' in Youngstown
Well my daddy he worked the furnaces, he kept 'em hotter than hell
I come home from 'Nam worked my way to scarfer, a job that'd suit the devil as well
Well taconite coke and limestone fed my children and made my pay
Them smokestacks reachin' like the arms of God into a beautiful sky of soot and clay
Here in Youngstown, here in Youngstown
Sweet Jenny I'm sinkin' down
Here darlin' in Youngstown
Well my daddy come on the Ohio works when he come home from World War Two
Now the yard's just scrap and rubble, he said "Those big boys did what Hitler couldn't do."
These mills they built the tanks and bombs that won this country's wars
We gave our sons to Korea and Vietnam, now we're wondering what they were dyin' for
Here in Youngstown, here in Youngstown
Hey my sweet Jenny I'm sinkin' down
Here darlin' in Youngstown
From the Monongahela valley to the Mesabi iron range
To the coal mines of Appalachia, the story's always the same
Seven hundred tons of metal a day, sir you tell me the world's changed
Once I made you rich enough, rich enough to forget my name
And Youngstown, and Youngstown
My sweet Jenny I'm sinkin' down
Here darlin' in Youngstown
When I die I don't want no part of heaven, I would not do heaven's work well
I pray the devil comes and takes me to stand in the fiery furnaces of hell
[Nils Lofgren guitar solo]

The Reunion Tour wrapped up with a 10-nights stand at Madison Square Gardens, New York
City, NY, between 12 Jun and 01 Jul 2000. Footage from the last three nights (27 Jun, 29 Jun, and

In New York City TV special. Running 90 minutes, the film consisted of a 14-songs selection
from the last two nights (29 Jun and 01 Jul 2000). It first aired on 07 Apr 2001 and was the first
ever major televised Bruce Springsteen concert.

The Essential Bruce Springsteen bonus disc:
The Complete Video Anthology / 1978-2000 DVD (disc 2):
- IF I SHOULD FALL BEHIND [rehearsal]
Notes:
- Last three (not two) nights of The Reunion Tour and a rehearsal were filmed: 27 Jun
2000, 29 Jun 2000, and 01 Jul 2000.
- Jonathan Demme reportedly directed an unreleased video of AMERICAN SKIN during a pre-show
rehearsal on 26 Jun 2000 at Madison Square Garden. Since he directed the IF I SHOULD FALL BEHIND
video from The Complete Video Anthology / 1978-2000 DVD, and since the band is
wearing the same outfit on both this video and on the Live In New York City DVD, we can
conclude that this video is most probably taken from this 26 Jun 2000 rehearsal.
- As a result, the rehearsal used in the Live In New York City DVD probably took place
on 26 Jun 2000 at Madison Square Garden, New York City, NY.
- THE GHOST OF TOM JOAD snippet on the featurette is definitely from the rehearsal since it was
not played on any of the 3 nights (27 Jun 2000, 29 Jun 2000, and 01 Jul 2000). What also supports
this is the lack of audience shots/noise and camera flashes on the footage.
- THUNDER ROAD is a mix of 27
Jun 2000 and 01 Jul 2000 (first verse is from 27 Jun 2000, the rest is from 01 Jul
2000.
- IF I SHOULD FALL BEHIND from the Live In New York City DVD is a mix from the 27 Jun
2000 and 01 Jul 2000 shows (most parts taken from the latter). Dividing the track chronologically,
we find the following:
Bruce's part: 27 Jun 2000
Steve's part: 01 Jul 2000
Nils' part: 27 Jun 2000
Patti's part: 01 Jul 2000
Nils and Patti's duo part: 01 Jul 2000
Clarence's sax solo: 01 Jul 2000
Clarence's part: 01 Jul 2000
Bruce's part: 01 Jul 2000
Clarence's part: 01 Jul 2000
Patti's part: 01 Jul 2000
Steve's part: 01 Jul 2000
Nils' part: 01 Jul 2000
Group's part: 01 Jul 2000
- The credits at the end of disc 2 of the Live In New York City DVD state that footage
from only the last two nights was used (29 Jun 2000 and 01 Jul 2000). However, as mentioned above,
THUNDER ROAD and IF I SHOULD FALL BEHIND contain portions from the 27 Jun 2000 show.

A full-band rock arrangement of YOUNGSTOWN was played during both of the Reunion Tour's
public rehearsal shows and on each of the tour's 132 regular dates. This new raging rocking
arrangement of the song soon became one of the highlights of the tour. The 29 Jun 2000 version of
the song was part of the HBO special. Subsequently, it was included on Live In New York
City, both the CD and DVD releases. The above lyrics are for that live 29 Jun 2000 performance
at Madison Square Garden, New York City, NY.
