AMERICAN MAN was cut recorded during the Wrecking Ball recording sessions. In a 06 Apr 2012 interview on Sirius XM's E Street Radio channel, producer Ron Aniello revealed that Springsteen crossed five songs off the Wrecking Ball album's track list, including SWALLOWED UP (IN THE BELLY OF THE WHALE) and a song called "American Man". The former was eventually included on the album as a bonus track.
