Live 17 Dec 2000 version
They say there's a light
Through darkness shines
If two hands protect that light
Against the change of time
You can have your gold and silver
Build your kingdoms high
But it's just one of those things baby
That money can't buy
So I don't care where we go baby
I don't care what we do
As long as I (as long as I) can be with you
Now I've been lost
And I've been found
Been lifted up to the gates of heaven
And put back down
I've walked in chains baby
And I've walked free
But I never walk the way that I do
When you walk with me
So I don't care where we go baby
I don't care what we do
As long as I (as long as I) can be with you
Oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh
Sha na na na na
Sha na na na na
Sha na na na na na na
Sha na na na na
Sha na na na na
Sha na na na na na na
Well maybe I'm just that foolish girl
'Cause I always thought the right kiss
Could wash away the sins of the world, yeah
Wash away those sins baby and go walkin' free
'Cause that's just how I feel darlin'
When you walk with me
So I don't care where we go baby
I don't care what we do
As long as I (as long as I) can be with you
As long as I (as long as I) can be with you
Oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh
Sha na na na na (whoah)
Sha na na na na (whoah)
Sha na na na na na na (whoah)
Sha na na na na (whoah)
Sha na na na na (whoah)
Sha na na na na na na (whoah)
Sha na na na na
Sha na na na na
Sha na na na na na na
Sha na na na na
Sha na na na na
Sha na na na na na na
Ah, a sha na na na na
Sha na na na na
Sha na na na na na na
Sha na na na na
Sha na na na na
Oh, sha na na na na na na
Sha na na na na
Sha na na na na
Sha na na na na na, oh
AS LONG AS I (CAN BE WITH YOU) is a 1993 song by Patti Scialfa. See the original Patti Scialfa version for more details.
The above lyrics are for the live 17 Dec 2000 performance of AS LONG AS I (CAN BE WITH YOU) at Convention Hall in Asbury Park, NJ, during the first of the two 2000 Asbury Park holiday shows. The song was performed with Patti Scialfa on vocals backed by Bruce Springsteen and the Max Weinberg 7.
Bruce Springsteen performed two Asbury Park holiday shows in 2000 (17 and 18 December). These concerts were billed as "Bruce Springsteen with The Max Weinberg 7 and Friends", with The Max Weinberg 7 serving as the house band, and Springsteen bringing guests on and off the stage throughout the shows.
AS LONG AS I (CAN BE WITH YOU) was performed during both 2000 Asbury Park holiday shows. These concerts were billed as "Bruce Springsteen with The Max Weinberg 7 and Friends", with The Max Weinberg 7 serving as the house band, and Springsteen bringing guests on and off the stage throughout the shows. On both nights, Patti Scialfa got a two-song set in the spotlight: ROSE and AS LONG AS I (CAN BE WITH YOU). She was backed by Bruce Springsteen on the first song and Bruce Springsteen and Bobby Bandiera on the second.
AS LONG AS I (CAN BE WITH YOU) was performed off-tour on 18 Apr 2004 (both the early and the late shows) at The Hit Factory in New York City, NY, during a showcase for Patti Scialfa's upcoming album 23rd Street Lullaby. Audio recording of AS LONG AS I (CAN BE WITH YOU) from one of the two shows was officially released as a bonus track on initial limited edition copies of 23rd Street Lullaby. See the live 18 Apr 2004 version for more details.
AS LONG AS I (CAN BE WITH YOU) was performed off-tour on 15 Sep 2004 at Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park, NJ, 21 Sep 2004 at Bowery Ballroom in New York City, NY, and 25 Sep 2004 at The Roxy Theatre in West Hollywood, CA, with Patti Scialfa, during her five-city tour to promote her 23rd Street Lullaby album.
AS LONG AS I (CAN BE WITH YOU) was performed once during the Vote For Change Tour (7 dates, October 2004), on 13 Oct 2004 in East Rutherford, NJ. This was the final date of Springsteen's Vote For Change tour. Patti Scialfa and her band opened this homecoming show, and Springsteen joined her playing guitar and sharing backup vocals on AS LONG AS I (CAN BE WITH YOU) and LOVE (STAND UP).
TENTH AVENUE FREEZE-OUT was performed on each night during The Reunion Tour, and in the middle of the song, Bruce Springsteen would introduce the band members one by one. He sings a snippet of RED HEADED WOMAN introducing Patti Scialfa who in turn sings a snippet of RUMBLE DOLL, but on a few occasions in May and June 1999 she sang AS LONG AS I (CAN BE WITH YOU) instead. See the live 29 May 1999 version of TENTH AVENUE FREEZE-OUT for an example.
