Unofficial studio version
Taxicab, taxicab at the light
Won't you take me on a ride through this city at night
I got some money and I'm feelin' fine
I ain't in no hurry so just take your time
Some people wanna die young and gloriously
Well taxicab driver, hey that ain't me
I got a cute little baby down at 12th and Vine
And she opens for business just about closin' time
Ah hey hey, ah hey hey
City of night, city of night
And
I don't believe what I see in this street
I don't know how they can take the heat
Well baby I am a liar, I'm a cheater and I don't care
I got my money, I can take my fare
I'm ridin' tonight, I'm on my way
Come on baby ???
I can take it or live it ???
I got my baby by the light of the sun
You know she brings it with her and then she comes
Hey, hey, city at night
Ah-hey, ah-hey, city at night
Ride on
Prior to the release of The Promise in 2010, one studio take of CITY OF NIGHT had been circulating on bootlegs. It was recorded in October or November 1977 at The Record Plant in New York City, NY. Bootleggers have used the titles "Taxi Cab" and "City At Night" for this song. According to Brucebase, "Bruce's working title was 'Taxi Driver'".
The above lyrics are for that unofficial studio version of CITY OF NIGHT. It can be found on several bootlegs, including Darkness Outtakes 1978 Vol. 1: The Iceman (Scorpio) [track 14], Son You May Kiss The Bride (unknown label) [track 01], and The Definitive Darkness Outtakes Collection (E. St. Records) [disc 1, track 09].
