Live 18 Jan 1971 version
[DANCING IN THE STREET:]
Calling out around the world, are you ready for a brand new beat
I seen the summer's here and the time's just right for dancing in the street
They'll be dancing in Chicago
Oh better get me down in New Orleans
In Philadelphia PA, yeah yeah
Woah now all we need is music, sweet music
There'll be music everywhere
Swinging, swaying, the records playing
It's a dance that you just can't beat
Oh brothers and sisters around the world, I said I want you all to stand
The time has come, Lord, the time has come, Lord I wanna see you dance
Do I hear Chicago
Oh it's San Francisco
Yeah down in Mississippi
All that we need is music, sweet music
There'll be music everywhere
Swinging, swaying, the records playing
It's a dance that you just can't beat
Oh
It doesn't matter what you wear
Just as long as you are there
Come on, every guy (every guy) grab a girl (grab a girl)
Everywhere around the world
Yeah, yeah
[HONKY TONK WOMEN:]
Well I met a gin-soaked, bar-room queen in Memphis
Oh, she tried to take me upstairs for a ride
And she had to heave me right across her shoulder
'Cause I just can't seem to drink the woman off my mind
Well she's a honky tonk woman
Woah, gimme, gimme, gimme the honky tonk girl
Well, ??? like a midnight grandma
It ain't one of those
No, no
[DANCING IN THE STREET (reprise):]
Come on out around the world, are you ready for a brand new beat, hey hey!
Summer's here and the time is just right for dancing in the street
They'll be dancing in Chicago
Or down in New Orleans
Philadelphia PA
All what we need is music, sweet music
There'll be music everywhere
Swinging, swaying, the records playing
It's a dance that you just can't
Woah
It doesn't matter what you wear
Just as long as, as long as you are there
So come on
Every guy (come on) grab a girl
Everywhere around the world
Yeah, yeah
Hey, hey
Dancing in the street, woah woah woah
Dancing in the street, don't forget the Motor City
Dancing in the street, down in New Orleans
Dancing in the street, Philadelphia PA
Yeah
You know well ahead
Woahhh ???
Now you uh, uh shaking yeah
Yeah woah woah, when we are, we're uh, swinging
I said we're dancing
The above lyrics are for a live 18 Jan 1971 performance of DANCING IN THE STREET at D'Scene in South Amboy, NJ, with Steel Mill. Bruce Springsteen and Robbin Thompson shared vocals on the song. This version features a snippet of The Rolling Stones' HONKY TONK WOMEN in the middle.
This was a double-bill show with Steel Mill headlining and Godzilla opening. A very good soundboard recording of the show is in circulation among collectors and is believed to be the entire Steel Mill performance.
