Robert Gordon's cover version
I'm driving in my car, turn on the radio
I'm pulling you close, but you just say no
You say you don't like it, but girl I know you're a liar
'Cause when we kiss, hmm, fire
Well late at night, I'm chasing you home
I say I wanna stay, you say you wanna be alone
You say you don't need me, but you can't hide your desire
'Cause when we kiss, hmm, fire
You had a hold on me right from the start
It felt so good I couldn't tear it apart
Got my nerves all jumping acting like a fool
'Cause your kisses they burn but your heart stays cool
Romeo and Juliet, Samson and Delilah
Baby you can bet their love they didn't deny
Well now your words say split, but your words they lie
'Cause when we kiss, hmm, fire
Ohh, fire, hmm, fire
Ohh, fire, ohh, fire
The above lyrics are for Robert Gordon's cover version of FIRE. It was released on his 1978 album Fresh Fish Special and also as a single. Bruce Springsteen plays piano on the recording of this song, but his guest appearance is not credited in the liner notes to Fresh Fish Special or the single, possibly due to his ongoing legal battles with former manager Mike Appel at the time.
Bruce Springsteen offered the song to Robert Gordon after he saw a live gig by Gordon and Link Wray in 1977. A according to Gordon, "it was a choice between 'Fire' and another new song but [Springsteen] decided to keep the other one for himself." The album was recorded in December 1977 at Plaza Sound Studios in New York City, NY.
Robert Gordon's cover version of FIRE can also be found on some various artists Bruce Springsteen tribute albums.
