Band rehearsal version
Well Janey's got a doctor who tears apart her insides
He investigates her and he silently bates her sighs
He probes with his fingers but he knows her heart only through his stethoscope
Hands are cold and his ??? so old
Janey turns him down like dope
Janey needs a shooter, Jack
A shooter like me on her side
Janey needs a shooter, Jack
A shooter man who knows her style
The way that I know her style
Well Janey's got a priest from his marble pulpit he smiles
He provides conciliation and confessions at any time
Through the pages of his bible he holds from what Janey hides
Her doors open wide she begs, "Come inside"
But he's frozen in the clear on the outside
Janey needs a shooter, Jack
A shooter like me on her side
Janey needs a shooter, Jack
A shooter man who knows her style
The way that I know her style
Well Janey's got a cop who lives 'round the block, checks on her every night
From through the jail outside her house his siren roars when he knows that I'm inside
Janey's small and sometimes he scares her
So I held her real close she flowed like a ghost
And I told her I so long, I can't play that dope
Well, Janey needs a shooter, Jack
A shooter like me on her side
Janey needs a shooter, Jack
A shooter man who knows her style
Janey needs a shooter, Jack
A shooter man on her side
Janey needs a shooter man
A shooter man who knows her style
The way that I know her style
A man who knows her style
The way that I know her style
A man who knows her style
The way that I know her style
A man who knows her style
The way that I know her style
A man who knows her style
The way that I know her style
A man who knows her style
The way I know your style
You need a man who knows your style
The way that I know your style
A man who knows her style
The way I know your style
The above lyrics are for a band rehearsal workout of JANEY NEEDS A SHOOTER recorded in late May 1979 at Springsteen's Telegraph Hill Road property in Holmdel, NJ, nicknamed "Telegraph Hill Studios". This wasn't a true studio; it was a converted barn that Springsteen and the band used to practice songs around the time The River was being cut in studio. Working out arrangements cuts down pricey hours at The Power Station where the album was recorded.
An audio recording for this band rehearsal version of the song is in the hands of private collectors and is yet to circulate widely. The quality of the private audio is far superior to that found on bootlegs (see section below), runs at the correct speed, and includes a count-in.
This band rehearsal version of JANEY NEEDS A SHOOTER can be found on The Definitive Darkness Outtakes Collection (E. St. Records) [disc 1, track 15] and Darkness Outtakes 1978 Vol. 1: The Iceman (Scorpio) [track 04] bootlegs.
Some of the above info about the Telegraph Hill sessions is taken from Brucebase.
