Live 10 Nov 2006 version
[Spoken intro (Lucinda Williams):] Alright, ok. ??? I think we should, we should play a song, and kinda everybody gets something to drink or something and come back, and we'll play some more if you'll let us. This is a song out of the "Car Wheels" record, it was recorded by great blues singer by the name of Betty Lavette. And uh, and Mr. Paul Brian up here played on Betty Lavette's album with, on that song and toured with her also. And of course we have the legendary Mr. Bruce Springsteen sitting there (cheers). This is called "Joy", and this goes out to all of you (cheers). Don't let anybody take your joy, especially the, the, don't let any government officials ever take your joy. All stay connected, and don't forget to vote. And we're, we're celebrating actually in our country 'cause we know (cheers) ??? we got a different kind of house of representative, different kind of Senate, and we got the first woman speaker in the house of representatives (cheers). So we're excited, we're celebrating, and we hope that we can help all of y'all with that too, finally getting our shit together. Thank you very much. This is called "Joy".
I don't want you anymore, 'cause you took my joy
I don't want you anymore, you took my joy
You took my joy, I want it back
You took my joy, I want it back
I'm gonna go to West Memphis and look for my joy
Go to West Memphis and look for my joy
Maybe in West Memphis I'll find my joy
Maybe in West Memphis I'll find my joy
I'm gonna go to Slidell and look for my joy
Go to Slidell and look for my joy
Maybe in Slidell I'll find my joy
Maybe in Slidell I'll find my joy
[Instrumental break with Bruce Springsteen guitar solos]
You got no right to take my joy, I want it back
You got no right to take my joy, I want it back

I'm gonna go to Slidell and look for my joy
Go to Slidell and look for my joy
Maybe in Slidell I'll find my joy

[Instrumental break with Bruce Springsteen guitar solos]
I don't want you anymore, 'cause you took my joy
I don't want you anymore, you took my joy

JOY is a song originally released by Lucinda Williams in 1998. See the original Lucinda Williams version for more details.
The above lyrics are for the live 10 Nov 2006 performance of JOY at Shepherd's Bush Empire in London, England, during a guest appearance with Lucinda Williams.
On 10 Nov 2016, a night off between The Seeger Sessions Tour shows in Birmingham and London, Bruce Springsteen, along with several members of The Seeger Sessions Tour band, made a surprise guest appearance at a Lucinda Williams show in London. Toward the end of the main set, Williams announced a special guest. Springsteen joined her and her three-piece band, strapping on one of guitarist Doug Pettibone's extra guitars, and orange/red Gibson, and took a spot behind bass player Paul Bryan. He played rhythm guitar and some solos on two songs, DISGUSTED and JOY.
JOY was performed off-tour on 10 Nov 2006 at Shepherd's Bush Empire in London, England, during a guest appearance with Lucinda Williams.
