Early home demo version
Early north Jersey, industrial skyline
Well, I'm an all-set cobra-jet creeping through the night time
I gotta find a gas station, I gotta find a pay phone
This turnpike sure is spooky, at night when you're all alone
I got a counter girl at the Exit 24 HoJo
Down by the refinery towers
Where the great black river flows
Gotta find gas, and I gotta find a pay phone, oh, oh
Mister, can you tell me what happened to the seeds
What happened to the seeds I've sown
Yeah, where they fall from my hand
And they fell on the ground of this hard land
I got a hidden baby on the line
Because I think I'm running out of time
I gotta meet her on the line
The above lyrics are for an early home demo version of OPEN ALL NIGHT recorded at Thrill Hill Recording (Springsteen's home studio) in Colts Neck, NJ, following the end of The River Tour, sometime between late March and early April 1981. This is an unfinished work-in-progress take. The first two verses are from LIVING ON THE EDGE OF THE WORLD and were later used in the album version of OPEN ALL NIGHT, the third verse later appeared in THIS HARD LAND, and the fourth verse is unique to this version.
This early home demo version of OPEN ALL NIGHT can be found on several bootlegs including Fist Full Of Dollars (E. St. Records) [track 28].
Thanks Jake (ol'catfishinthelake at BTX and Greasy Lake) for the lyrics help.
