Home demo version 2
Jesse James
It was a sunny afternoon down at the kissing shack
And Robert went for, ran for the amnesty, run for amnesty, if I were... Robert Ford shot Jesse in the back
He ran, Bobby, he ran, he ran to Maria, but the freedom he gained from his sins
She said Bobby, oh Bobby what have you done
And she would not marry him
He swore he'd never hang his head in shame
And so he rode with his gun in his hand
Everywhere across the land people came
To meet the man who shot Jesse James
Branded, branded down among the cattle, he made his bed yeah from a rock on the mountainside
Stood on the banks of his old world, hung his head and cried
He was killed when he lied of all of the ???
Who was just out to make himself a name
He lays in the blood dying in the sun
And in his mind─ dream, he dreamed my way again
Well then he lay down among the lambs
He spoke aloud as if trying every word
Well then I heard Jesse saying to himself
I'm sorry for what I've done
Da da da...
Da da da...
Da da da...
Da da da...
Da da da...
Da da da...
Da da da...
Da da da...
The above lyrics are for a solo acoustic home demo take of ROBERT FORD recorded sometime between mid-September 1981 and May 1982 at Springsteen's home in Colts Neck, NJ. It's a more developed but still far from finished take.
The line "He lays in the blood dying in the sun" would be later used in OUTLAW PETE ("Dan smiled as he lay in his own blood dying in the sun").
This home demo version 2 of ROBERT FORD can be found on The Lost Masters Vol. 10 (Labour Of Love) [track 20] bootleg. The song is listed under the title "Jesse James".
