RUMBLE is an instrumental written by Milt Grant and Link Wray and originally released by Link Wray & His Ray Men as a single in 1985. The piece is one of very few instrumental singles banned from the radio airwaves in the United States. In 2018, it was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in a new category for singles.
Link Wray passed away on 05 Nov 2005 of heart failure at his home in Copenhagen, Denmark, where he had been living for the past two decades. On the last two dates of the Devils & Dust Solo Acoustic Tour, on 21 and 22 Nov 2005 in Trenton, NJ, Bruce Springsteen opened the show playing RUMBLE in memory of the great guitarist ─ news of Wray's death earlier that month has just come out in recent days. On both nights, he emerged with his electric guitar and said, "This is for Link Wray". Ending the song, he left the guitar shrieking with feedback on its stand as he transitioned over to the bullet mic for Born in the U.S.A.
One version of RUMBLE was officially released.
RUMBLE was performed twice during the Devils & Dust Solo Acoustic Tour (72 dates, April to November 2005), on 21 and 22 Nov 2005 in Trenton, NJ. On this tour, the song was played in a foot-stomping electric guitar arrangement. The live 22 Nov 2005 version of RUMBLE was released on the Sovereign Bank Arena, Trenton, NJ 2005 official live download in 2018.
