Band rehearsal version
One, two, three, four!
Last night I went to the ???
Bought my ticket and I found my seat
It was a killer straight fun ??? moving out
Light went down as I felt the heat
They went down from the final scene
Burning rubber, pouring gasoline
As the credits rolled away
They were still chasing the man who got away
Every night for weeks and weeks now
I beat the headaches, I beat the heat now
For two hours I, I can see now
The man who got away was me
I had visions of finer things
Beautiful women with ??? wings
??? night and day
Just waiting for the man who gets away
Ahhh-ahhh
Ohhh-whoa
Woah!
Inside Stockton, radio went dead
That's when I heard what the newsman said
Said, "armed robbery at the ??? Stockton shop
Two men involved over, one man shot, shot
While his accomplice made the payday
With a 45 he blew the cashier away-ay
Police shot and killed, ???
In a high speed chase on the highway"
We went down in the final scene
In a hail of bullets and flaming gasoline
??? feel the heat
Well I got to stop somewhere, I get to get off of my seat
In the cold, through the mist
Through the hail, ??? found someone
I beat the ???, it made my day
Slapped my hand with the man who got away
Whoa!
The above lyrics are for a band rehearsal workout of THE MAN WHO GOT AWAY recorded on 30 Mar 1979 at Springsteen's Telegraph Hill Road property in Holmdel, NJ. Nicknamed "Telegraph Hill Studios", this was a converted barn that Springsteen and the band used to practice songs around the time The River was being cut in studio. Working out arrangements cuts down pricey hours at The Power Station where the album was recorded. A significant amount of The River sessions audio that has surfaced unofficially comes from these Telegraph Hill sessions. Unfortunately the audio quality leaves much to be desired. It sounds as if a single boom recording mike was used and Springsteen's vocals are buried under the instruments on virtually all these recordings.
This band rehearsal take of THE MAN WHO GOT AWAY can be found on The Lost Masters Vol. 4 (Labour Of Love) [track 11] bootleg.
Some of the above info about the Telegraph Hill sessions is taken from Brucebase.
