Original Frank Sinatra version
The moon was yellow and the night was young
A smile brought us together and I was wondering whether we'd meet again someday
The moon was yellow and the song was sung
That vocal inspiration gave me the inclination to give my heart away
Here we are, is our romance to continue
Will it be my luck to win you, may I look that far
My love is mellow and my hopes are strung
Around that cupid fellow, behold the moon is yellow, and the night is young
(Here we are, is our romance to continue)
Will it be my luck to win you, may I look that far
My love is mellow and my hopes are strung
Around that cupid fellow, behold the moon is yellow, and the night is young
THE MOON WAS YELLOW (AND THE NIGHT WAS YOUNG) is a song written by Fred Ahlert and Edgar Leslie in 1934 and most famously recorded by Frank Sinatra. His first recording of the song was for Columbia Records and reportedly dates to 1945. That recording, featuring the Ken Lane Singers, was released on his 1950 album Dedicated To You. The above lyrics are for the original Frank Sinatra version of THE MOON WAS YELLOW (AND THE NIGHT WAS YOUNG) as released in 1950.
Frank Sinatra recorded THE MOON WAS YELLOW (AND THE NIGHT WAS YOUNG) again in 1958 for Capitol Records. That recording was released as a single in 1962. He again recorded the song in 1965 for Reprise Records. That recording was released in 1966 on his album Moonlight Sinatra.
As far as it's known, Bruce Springsteen has never covered THE MOON WAS YELLOW (AND THE NIGHT WAS YOUNG). However, the liner notes of his Hammersmith Odeon, London '75 album and home video releases of the 18 Nov 1975 concert in London, England, mistakenly state that SPIRIT IN THE NIGHT contains a portion of THE MOON WAS YELLOW (AND THE NIGHT WAS YOUNG) written by F. Ahlert and E. Leslie, while the actual lines he used in the song's introduction are from the traditional song STAGGER LEE. See Bruce Springsteen's live 18 Nov 1975 version of SPIRIT IN THE NIGHT for more details.
