Handwritten lyrics #2
The wind + the rain slashing at my
window pane
lighting flashing looks like the skys [sic]
gone insane
thunder crashing I'm riding that
south bond [sic] train
with nothing left but the wind + rain
Summertime, summertime I remember when
you were mine
but now I've left that far behind
the Lord can be my witness as to how I
tryed [sic]
I guess the wind + the rain is forever
mine
broken truth memories of you
haunting dreams that just can't come
true
how long has it been since I've known
you
Now the wind + the rain is my only all that's [sic]
truth
Didn't time show you enough
you know where I stood when
the going got rought [sic]
the years have made me far to [sic] tough
now the wind + the rain is my only
love
The above lyrics are for an early draft of THE WIND AND THE RAIN dating around 1968 or 1969. It likely predates handwritten lyrics #1. Springsteen transcribed four verses in blue ballpoint on both sides of a sheet of lined notebook paper. He titled the song "Wind + Rain".
