John Fogerty's album version
Fogerty and Springsteen: | I've been cheated |
Been mistreated | |
When will I be loved? | |
Fogerty and Springsteen: | I've been pushed down |
I've been pushed 'round
When will I be loved? | |
John Fogerty: | When I find a new girl |
That I want for mine | |
She always breaks my heart in two
Fogerty and Springsteen: | It happens every time |
Fogerty and Springsteen: | I've been made blue |
I've been lied to | |
When will I be loved? | |
John Fogerty: | Oh, man! I just want to know when! |
Bruce Springsteen: | Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. |
Bruce Springsteen: | When I find a new girl |
Yeah, that I want for mine
She always breaks my heart in two
Fogerty and Springsteen: | It happens every time |
Jodie Kennedy: | Whoa whoa whoa |
Fogerty and Springsteen: | I've been cheated |
Been mistreated | |
When will I be loved? | |
When will I be loved? | |
John Fogerty: | Tell me |
Fogerty and Springsteen: | When will I be loved? |
WHEN WILL I BE LOVED is a 1960 song by The Everly Brothers. See the original The Everly Brothers' version for more details.
John Fogerty recorded WHEN WILL I BE LOVED and released it on his 2009 album The Blue Ridge Rangers Rides Again. His recording features Bruce Springsteen backing vocals on the chorus and singing lead on one verse. The above lyrics are for John Fogerty's album version of WHEN WILL I BE LOVED as released in 2009.
John Fogerty's cover of WHEN WILL I BE LOVED is the twelfth (and closing) track on his album The Blue Ridge Rangers Rides Again, released on 25 Aug 2009 Fogerty's own label Fortunate Son Records and distributed by Verve Forecast Records. The album was arranged and produced by John Fogerty. The song debuted on 09 Aug 2009, streaming on Fogerty's official website.
The Blue Ridge Rangers Rides Again is John Fogerty's eighth solo album and is a sequel to his first solo album, The Blue Ridge Rangers, which was released in 1973. Both albums are made up entirely of traditional and country covers. While the first consisted entirely of Fogerty singing all the vocals and playing all the instruments by himself, the second uses a backing band and features special guests Bruce Springsteen, The Eagles' Don Henley, and Timothy B. Schmit. Fogerty commented, "I'd long thought I'd do another Blue Ridge Rangers album and not make the mistake of playing all the instruments."
Fogerty and Springsteen have long been admirers of each other's work but never recorded together. However they have shared the stage on many occasions, and have even shared the bill in 2004 during the Vote For Change Tour and later in 2012 during the Hard Rock Calling Festival and 2014 during the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. "I've wanted to do something with Bruce forever, probably 20-some odd years," Fogerty said.
It was Fogerty's wife, Julie, who had the idea to have Springsteen duet on WHEN WILL I BE LOVED. As Fogerty explained, she told him, "You know, that's be really great if you sang that with somebody else, like your friend Bruce Springsteen." Julie discussed the idea with Springsteen who immediately agreed. The track was cut in October 2008 at Berkeley Street Studios in Santa Monica, CA, and the Fogertys travelled to Springsteen's New Jersey where the vocals were completed. "The hardest part was it was in a very high range for Bruce's voice, but he got it done," Fogerty explained. "He didn't complain; he didn't wimp out. It sounds great. It was remarkable how much of a chance he would take." Footage from the recording sessions in New Jersey can be seen in the bonus DVD that comes with the deluxe edition of the album. "In the end, you're just singing rock and roll," Fogerty said. "That's kinda what happened."
Bruce Springsteen makes a cameo in the official music video for WHEN WILL I BE LOVED, appearing on a Wanted poster at 1:38 (see video below). The video is directed by David Gelb and produced by Sean-Michael Smith, Adam Litt, and Javier Solis. Cinematography is by Will Basanta and Clay Jeter.
