BLOOD BROTHERS

Live 01 Jul 2000 version

[Spoken intro:] I want to uh, I want to mention some folks – we have some good friends with us tonight. Folks from the Food For Survival. They're here in New York City and uh, they provide food ??? you can help struggling New York citizens. They do – they deserve your support. We talked a lot about faith on this tour, faith don't mean nothing unless you put it into action. So please give some assistance to the folks of Food For Survival. We got one more we wanna do for you but we're gonna need a little bit of quiet, so... come on my friends.

We played king of the mountain out on the end
The world come charging up the hill, and we were women and men
Now there's so much that time, time and memory fade away
We've got our own roads to ride and chances we've got to take
Well, we stood side by side each one fighting for the other
And we swore until we'd die we'll always be blood brothers

Now the hardness of this world, it slowly grinds your dreams away
Making a fool's joke out of the promises we make
And what once seemed black and white turns to so many shades of gray
And we lose ourselves in work to do, work to do and bills to pay
And it's a ride, ride, ride, and there ain't much cover
With no one running by your side, my blood brother

On through the houses of the dead past those fallen in their tracks
We're always moving ahead and never looking back

And "C"!

Now I'm out here on this road, alone on this road tonight
Close my eyes and feel so many friends around me in the early evening light
And the miles we have come and the battles won and lost
Are just so many roads traveled, so many rivers crossed
And I ask God for the strength and faith in one another
'Cause it's a good night for a ride 'cross this river to the other side, my blood brothers

Let's go!

[Spoken outro:] We'll be seeing you! Thank you New York! We love you.

Info

The above lyrics are for the live 01 Jul 2000 performance of BLOOD BROTHERS at Madison Square Garden in New York City, NY, during The Reunion Tour. The song was the show closer on this tour finale, and featured a rewritten last verse. As the music settled after the "houses of the dead" verse, Springsteen paused and motioned for everyone not behind a drum kit or keyboard to come to the front of the stage, where they joined hands to form a line, facing the crowd. He sang an entirely new closing verse that surprised everyone and many were moved to tears. The music built back up and the band soared, led by Springsteen's harmonica and Clarence Clemons' saxophone, before gently ending the song, the show, the stand, and the tour in an absolutely perfect way.

Live In New York City

The Reunion Tour wrapped up with a ten-night stand at Madison Square Gardens in New York City, between 12 June and 01 July 2000. Footage from the last three nights (27 Jun, 29 Jun, and 01 Jul 2000) was used in early 2001 for HBO's Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band: Live In New York City TV special. Running at 90 minutes, the film consisted of a 14-song selection from the last two nights (29 Jun and 01 Jul 2000). It first aired on 07 Apr 2001 and was the first ever major televised Bruce Springsteen concert.

In 2001, HBO received six Emmy Award nominations and won two for their acclaimed film.

  • The Live In New York City album was released on CD, Super Audio CD, and vinyl. The home video was released on DVD and VHS.
  • Last three (not two) nights of The Reunion Tour (27 Jun 2000, 29 Jun 2000, and 01 Jul 2000) and a rehearsal were filmed.
  • Jonathan Demme reportedly directed an unreleased video of AMERICAN SKIN (41 SHOTS) during a pre-show rehearsal on 26 Jun 2000 at Madison Square Garden. Therefore, the rehearsal footage used in the Live In New York City home video most probably took place on 26 Jun 2000 at Madison Square Garden, New York City, NY.
  • THE GHOST OF TOM JOAD snippet on the featurette is definitely from the rehearsal since it was not played on any of the three nights (27 Jun 2000, 29 Jun 2000, and 01 Jul 2000). What also supports this is the lack of audience shots/noise and camera flashes on the footage.
  • TENTH AVENUE FREEZE-OUT is a mix of 29 Jun 2000 and 01 Jul 2000.
  • THUNDER ROAD is a mix of 27 Jun 2000 and 01 Jul 2000.
  • IF I SHOULD FALL BEHIND from the Live In New York City DVD is a mix from the 27 Jun 2000 and 01 Jul 2000 shows.
  • The credits at the end of disc 2 of the Live In New York City DVD state that footage from only the last two nights (29 Jun 2000 and 01 Jul 2000) was used. However, as mentioned above, THUNDER ROAD and IF I SHOULD FALL BEHIND contain portions from the 27 Jun 2000 show.
  • The audio playing over the New York City Serenade featurette closing credits is the beginning of BLOOD BROTHERS, looped on itself over and over again, with no vocals but with crowd noise added. The music is the same as the version of that song that appears earlier in the featurette, which was recorded on 01 Jul 2000, so the audio snippet is most probably taken from that version.
