Live 20 Aug 1994 version
Well they blew up the chicken man in Philly last night
Now they blew up his house too
Down on the boardwalk they're getting ready for a hell of a fight
Gonna see what those racket boys can do
Now there's trouble busting in from outta state
And the D.A. can't get no relief
Gonna be a rumble out on the promenade
The gambling commissions hanging on by the skin of its teeth
Everything dies baby that's a fact
Maybe everything that dies someday comes back
Put your makeup on, fix your hair up pretty
And meet me tonight in Atlantic City
Hey!
Well I got a job and I tried to put my money away
But I got debts that no honest man could pay
So I drew all my money from the Central Trust
I bought me and my baby two tickets on that Coast City bus
Everything dies baby that's a fact
Maybe everything that dies someday comes back
Put your makeup on, fix your hair up pretty
And meet me tonight in Atlantic City
Say!
Luck may have died and our love may be cold
But with you forever I'll stay
We're going out where the sand's turning to gold
Put on your stockings, the night's getting cold
Maybe everything dies baby that's a fact
But maybe everything that dies someday comes back
One! Two! Three! Four!
[Instrumental]
I've been looking for a job but it's hard to find
Down here it's just winners and losers and don't get caught on the wrong side of that line
I'm tired of coming out on the losing end
Last night I met this guy and I'm gonna do a little favor for him
Everything dies baby that's a fact
Maybe everything that dies someday come back
Put your makeup on, fix your hair up pretty
And meet me tonight in Atlantic City
And meet me tonight in Atlantic City
And meet me tonight in Atlantic City
Come on and meet me tonight in Atlantic City
Come on and meet me tonight in Atlantic City
Come on and meet me tonight in Atlantic City
Come on and meet me tonight in Atlantic City
Come on and meet me tonight in Atlantic City
Say!
The above lyrics are for the live 20 Aug 1994 performance of ATLANTIC CITY at Marz American Style in Long Branch, NJ, during a guest appearance with Joe Grushecky & The Houserockers. The song was played in a full-band arrangement with Bruce Springsteen on lead vocals, backed by Joe Grushecky & The Houserockers.
This was a Joe Grushecky & The Houserockers show, part of the American Style series. Bruce Springsteen joined Grushecky and his band during this show, which also featured special guest appearances by John Eddie and Dion DiMucci on some of the songs. Springsteen showed up at earlier that afternoon to do a full soundcheck. He came by himself, on his Harley Davidson.
The 20 Aug 1994 show at Marz American Style was commercially released in Europe. Since 2005 some enterprising record labels in Europe (mostly in the UK) have been releasing Bruce Springsteen radio and TV broadcasts (and some soundboard recordings) from the seventies, eighties, and nineties. Though these releases are not authorized by Bruce Springsteen or his record company, they are lawful due to a legal loophole in Europe.
