Dion Dimucci's cover version
I'm standing in the backyard listening to the party inside
Tonight I'm drinking in the forgiveness this life provides
The scars we carry remain but the pain slips away it seems
Oh won't you baby be in my book of dreams
I'm watching you through the window with your girlfriends from back home
You're showing off your dress, there's laughter and a toast
From your daddy to the prettiest bride that he's ever seen
Oh won't you baby be in my book of dreams
Woahhh won't you, won't you baby
Woah baby, hmm hmm hmm
In the darkness my fingers slip across your skin, I feel your sweet reply
The room fades away and I'm way up high
Just holding you to me as through the window the moonlight streams
Oh won't you baby be in my book of dreams
Now the ritual begins, 'neath the wedding garland we meet as strangers
The dance floor is alive with beauty, mystery and danger
We dance out 'neath the stars' ancient light into the darkening trees
Woah won't you baby be in my book of dreams
Come on baby will you be in my book of dreams
Oh won't you baby be in my book of dreams
The above lyrics are for Dion DiMucci's cover version of Bruce Springsteen's BOOK OF DREAMS. The song was released on his 2000 album Déjà Nu.
Dion DiMucci's cover version of BOOK OF DREAMS was recorded at Sound Of Media Recording is Merrick, NY, produced by and engineered by Bob Cadway, co-produced by Dion DiMucci. The track features Dion DiMucci on guitar and vocal and Louis Colletti, Jim Gallagher, and Joe Neary on backing vocals.
Bruce Springsteen first met Dion DiMucci in October 1975 when he was invited by Phil Spector to watch him work on a Dion single at Gold Star Studios in Los Angeles, CA. Steven Van Zandt, while touring as a member of the backing band for fifties vocal group The Dovells, had actually played guitar in Dion's backing band at a show in Miami, FL, on 31 Dec 1972. That trip, according to Van Zandt, is the original source of his nickname "Miami" Steve.
On 30 Sep 1976, Springsteen and Van Zandt made an unannounced guest appearance during an encore at Dion's second (late) show at The Roxy Theatre in West Hollywood, CA. They provided backing vocals on Dion's THE WANDERER. Dion introduced the pair as "honorary Belmonts". Since then, Dion and Springsteen have shared the stage on several occasions. They have performed together Dion's A TEENAGER IN LOVE and THE WANDERER and Springsteen's IF I SHOULD FALL BEHIND.
Springsteen described Dion as "the link between Sinatra and rock 'n' roll." Dion recorded and released two Springsteen songs IF I SHOULD FALL BEHIND in 1992 and BOOK OF DREAMS in 2000. Springsteen appeared on Dion's 2020 album Blues With Friends, playing guitar on HYMN TO HIM, and on Dion's 2021 album Stomping Ground, playing guitar and harmonica on ANGEL IN THE ALLEYWAYS.
In addition to its release on Déjà Nu, Dion DiMucci's cover version of BOOK OF DREAMS was included on some other official releases.
Liner notes from the Light Of Day: A Tribute To Bruce Springsteen album booklet:
"Book Of Dreams" is a great song. It reminded me of my wedding day forty years ago.
In "Book Of Dreams," Bruce writes multi-dimensionally. The first verse deal with the past, the second verse is in the present, the third verse is imagined and the fourth verse looks into the future. Also, I wanted to show Bruce how he uses keyboards to create a mood - like I used background vocals.- Dion DiMucci
