Jesse Malin's album version
Jesse Malin: | I was thinking about another time still in my mind |
Well I used to know a little girl high on this world
Jesse Malin: | Your baby loves you more than you know |
Raised on rivalry and rock and roll
Moving to the motor City soul, she lets go on the radio
Bruce Springsteen: | Well we never had a lot of cash, but we loved those kids |
Some say that she missed the boat, but she just burned the bridge
Malin and Springsteen: | The angels love you more than you know |
Raised on robbery and rock and roll
Moving to the Motor City soul
Jesse Malin: | She takes hold on the radio |
Jesse Malin: | Stomachache Sundays |
Malin and Springsteen: | And books we never read |
Jesse Malin: | Well I was hoping some day |
Malin and Springsteen: | We might meet again |
Jesse Malin: | She used to talk about astrology, she was born in June |
She danced with strangers and celebrities, empty stars and the full moon
Malin and Springsteen: | I was thinking about the universe, for what its worth |
Or the one about the Phoenix bird that died and returned
Malin and Springsteen: | The angels love you more than you know |
Raised on robbery and rock and roll
Moving to the Motor City soul
Moving to the Motor City soul
Jesse Malin: | Sometimes I see her face when there's no place to go |
On the radio | |
On the radio | |
On the radio | |
Bruce Springsteen: | The angels love you more |
Jesse Malin: | On the radio |
Broken radio | |
Oooh |
BROKEN RADIO is a song written by Jesse Malin and released on his 2007 album Glitter In The Gutter. The above lyrics are for Jesse Malin's album version of BROKEN RADIO as released in 2007.
Bruce Springsteen contributed to the studio recording of BROKEN RADIO, sharing backing and some lead vocals on the song. His parts were recorded in August 2006 at Thrill Hill East, Springsteen's home studio in Rumson, NJ. Jesse Malin was present at the Thrill Hill East recording sessions, but it seems that his parts were recorded earlier at a different location with the band. "He drove up on his motorcycle and banged it out," Jesse Malin told the Asbury Park Press of Springsteen, "The guy just sang his heart out." The album was released on 20 Mar 2007.
Bruce Springsteen appears in the official music video for BROKEN RADIO. He joined Jesse Malin for the filming of the video for on 18 Apr 2007 at Soundstage in New York City, NY. The video was released in May 2007. It shows shots of Tompkins Square Park and East Village in New York intercepted with frames of Malin and Springsteen at the microphone. A "new version" of the video, consisting only of the Malin and Springsteen footage, was released in August 2007. The video, or at least the new version of it, was directed by Danny Clinch.
In addition to its release on Glitter In The Gutter, Jesse Malin's album version of BROKEN RADIO was also released as a single on 21 May 2007. The song also appears on one various artists promotional sampler.
Jesse Malin contributed a version of HUNGRY HEART to the Light Of Day: A Tribute To Bruce Springsteen benefit album in early 2003. Soon after he accepted an invitation to join the line-up for that year's annual Light Of Day benefit shows in Asbury Park, NJ. He met with Bruce Springsteen backstage prior to the second day's festivities and gave him a copy his debut solo album The Fine Art Of Self Destruction. "I gave him my record. Then he rang a week later and left a message on my machine. When I called him back he just said, 'tell me everything'," Malin recounted. Springsteen subsequently invited Malin to play his Christmas benefit shows (05, 07, and 08 Dec 2003) in Asbury Park. "He said his band had learned three of my songs and would I sing them. It felt so weird with him standing there singing and playing guitar on my songs." On each of three nights Malin performed QUEEN OF THE UNDERWORLD and WENDY, backed by The Max Weinberg 7 and Springsteen on guitar.
Springsteen appeared on Malin's 2007 album Glitter In The Gutter, sharing vocals on BROKEN RADIO. Since then the two have shared the stage a number of times, mostly during the annual Light Of Day benefit shows.
BROKEN RADIO was performed during the tenth (2010) and eleventh (2011) annual Light Of Day benefits. The song was played with Jesse Malin during his set.
