Album version
I got a coin in my palm
I can make it disappear
I got a card up my sleeve
Name it and I'll pull it out your ear
I got a rabbit in my hat
If you wanna come and see
This is what will be
This is what will be
I got shackles on my wrists
Soon I'll slip 'em and be gone (slip 'em and be gone)
Chain me in a box in your river
And I'll rise singing this song
Trust none of what you hear (trust none of what you hear)
And less of what you see
This is what will be (this is what will be)
This is what will be
[Instrumental]
(I'll cut you in half)
I got a shiny saw blade (a shiny saw blade)
All I need's a volunteer
I'll cut you in half
While you're smiling ear to ear
And the freedom that you sought's
Driftin' like a ghost amongst the trees
This is what will be
This is what will be (this is what will be)
Now there's a fire down below
But it's coming up here
So leave everything you know
Carry only what you fear
On the road the sun is sinking low
There's bodies hanging in the trees
This is what will be (this is what will be)
This is what will be
MAGIC is a song written by Bruce Springsteen and released on his 2007 album Magic. The above lyrics are for Bruce Springsteen's album version of MAGIC as released in 2007.
It's unknown when exactly MAGIC was written, but the song was recorded during
the Magic recording sessions which took place between March and May 2007 at Southern
Tracks Studios in Atlanta, GA. Soozie Tyrell contributes violin, Jeremy Chatzky contributes
upright piano, and Patrick Warren contributes Chamberlin and/or tack piano on this track.
In an interview dated 17 Oct 2007 and published in Rolling Stone magazine issue # 1038 (01 Nov 2007), Bruce Springsteen told Joe Levy: "The song 'Magic' is about living in a time when anything that is true can be made to seem like a lie, and anything that is a lie can be made to seem true. There are people that have taken that as their credo. The classic quote was from one of the Bushies in The New York Times: 'We make our own reality. You guys report it, we make it.' I may loathe that statement — the unbelievable stupidity and arrogance of it — more than I loathe 'Bring it on' and 'Mission accomplished.' That song, it's all about illusion: 'Trust none of what you hear / And less of what you'll see / This is what will be' — we make it. Until you get to the last verse: 'There's a fire down below / It's coming up here... There's bodies hanging in the trees / This is what will be.' That's the heart of my record right there."
Magic is Bruce Springsteen's fifteenth studio album. It was released on 02 Oct 2007 on Columbia Records. The album was officially announced, along with its track listing, on 16 Aug 2007. It was produced by Brendan O'Brien and was recorded between March and May 2007 at Southern Tracks Studios in Atlanta, GA.
Magic was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album but failed to win. It debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart, becoming Springsteen's eighth number one album in the U.S. and selling about 335,000 copies in its first week. Magic also peaked at number one in several European countries including the UK.
The album features 12 tracks and clocks at 50:48. The twelfth track is bonus hidden track that was added to the album two weeks after the album was announced.
Other versions of MAGIC were also officially released.
In preparation for the Magic Tour, MAGIC was performed during two of the tour's three public warm-up rehearsal shows that took place in September 2007 in Asbury Park and East Rutherford. The song is also known to have been practiced during at least one of the private rehearsals that took place in February 2008 in Asbury Park prior to the tour's second U.S. leg.
MAGIC was performed 66 times during the Magic Tour (100 dates, October 2007 to August 2008), including the tour's first 48 consecutive dates. The live 19 Nov 2007 version of MAGIC was released on the TD Banknorth Garden, Boston 11/19/07 official live download in 2018. The live 28 Apr 2008 version of MAGIC was released on the Greensboro, North Carolina April 28, 2008 official live download in 2020.
