Live 21 Jun 1984 version
[Spoken intro:] We gonna try it! (chuckles) I don't know if I remember all the words! Here we go!
Spread out now, Rosie, doctor come cut loose her mama's reins
You know playing blind man's bluff is a little baby's game
You pick up Little Dynamite, I'm gonna pick up Little Gun
Together we're gonna go out tonight and make that highway run
You don't have to call me lieutenant, and I don't want to be your son
The only lover I'm ever gonna need's your soft sweet little girl's tongue
You're the one!
Rosalita, jump a little lighter
Senorita, come sit by my fire
I just want to be your lover, ain't no liar
Rosie, you're my stone desire
Jack the Rabbit, Weak Knees Willie, you know it's gonna be there
Gonna be Sloppy Sue, Big Bones Billy, they'll be coming up for air
We're gonna play some pool, skip some school, act real cool
Stay out all night, it's gonna feel all right
Rosie, come out tonight, come out tonight
Windows are for cheaters, chimneys for the poor
Closets are for hangers, winners use the door!
Rosalita, jump a little lighter
Senorita, come sit by my fire
I just want to be your lover, ain't no liar
Rosie, you're my stone desire (oh, oh)
Mm!
One, two, three, four!
[Spoken:] Ladies and gentlemen! Pennsylvanians of all ages! We have with us tonight a star-studded cast on our stage here in the Village! We got on the piano, Professor Roy Bittan! On the guitar, Mr. Nils Lofgren! On the bass, Mr. Garry W. Tallent! On the drums, the mighty Max Weinberg! And last but not least, that's right, do I have to say his name? The Master of Disaster, the King of the Universe, the Emperor of All Things, the one, the only, Clarence Big Man Clemons!
Bring it up!
I know your mama, she don't like me 'cause I play in a rock and roll band
I know your pop don't dig me, he never did understand
Your papa lowered the boom, locked you in your room
I'm coming to lend a hand
I want to liberate you, confiscate you, I want to be your man
Someday we'll look back on this and it will all seem funny
Now you're sad, mama's mad
(Your papa says he knows that I don't have any money)
(Papa says he knows that I don't have any money)
Say what?
(Papa says he knows that I don't have any money)
This is his last chance to get his daughter in a fine romance
The record company, Rosie, gave me a big advance!
My tires were slashed and I almost crashed, the Lord had mercy
My machine, she's a dud, out stuck in the mud somewhere in the swamps of Jersey
Hold on tight, stay up all night, Rosie, I'm coming on strong
By the time we meet the morning light, I will hold you in my arms
I know a pretty little place in Southern California down San Diego way
They let a juke box play, they play guitars all night and day
Hear 'em in the back room strumming
Hold tight, baby, don't you know I'm coming
Everybody say
(Ohhhh!)
Whoa!
Rosalita, jump a little lighter
Senorita, come sit by my fire
I just want to be your lover, ain't no liar
Rosie, you're my stone desire (oh, oh)
(Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey!)
Come on out tonight! Thanks, everyone!
[Spoken outro:] Thank you!
The above lyrics are for the live 21 Jun 1984 performance at The Village in Lancaster, PA, during a Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band surprise appearance at the nightclub. The song was played in a full-band version, and it was the first with Nils Lofgren on guitar. Notably, the "Dynamite's in the belfry..." verse was skipped in this version.
Bruce Springsteen and the band were in town rehearsing at Clair Brothers Audio in Lititz, PA, for the upcoming Born In The USA Tour. With the absence of Danny Federici, they took the stage at The Village for an impromptu 35-minute set. The Sharks, the only band scheduled to perform at the nightclub that night, cut their set short and announced that Springsteen will be next on stage. The set started at around 1:40 a.m. with the band utilizing The Sharks' instruments, including an electric drum kit and a synthesizer.
